Grumpy old men may not be able to help it, as age could affect their sense of humour, scientists have found.

A study by Washington University in St Louis found older people find it harder to understand jokes than students.

The authors say the finding should be taken seriously as laughing has been linked to health benefits such as boosting circulation.

The findings were published in the Journal of the International Neuropsychological Society.

The researchers tested 40 people aged over 65, and 40 undergraduates.

The participants had to complete jokes and cartoon strips, choosing the correct punchline or final picture from a selection of options.

Choosing the punchline for jokes, undergraduates performed 6% better than older people, and completing cartoon strips they were 14% better.

Because it is vocally oriented, sarcasm can be difficult to grasp in written form and is easily misinterpreted. To prevent this some people emphasize words with italics, bold, capitalization, and/or underlining (e.g. that’s just great); sarcastic comments on the Internet with an emoticon; or surround them with a made-up markup language tag, e.g. *sarcasm*, <sarcasm> or <snicker>.

Writers in the UK and some other countries have adopted the use of (!) (An exclamation mark in parentheses) following speech in which sarcasm or irony is perceptible via the tone of voice, a punctuation mark which is very regularly seen in subtitles.

Whilst this happens it is not universally the case. for example Shakespeare regularly used sarcasm as a literary tool to emphasize a point or joke and rarely ever used quotation marks or italics.

This isn't the least bit funny! Why, back in my day.......

JUST KIDDING!!!!!!

We should ALL be required to lighten up as often as we can, especially some in the political forums who take themselves WAY too seriously(and you know who you are).

As someone once said in the old Pogo(anyone remember it?)comic-strip:
"Don't take life so serious, son. It ain't nohow permanent,anyways.".

Wow! My retirement portfolio has a higher rate of return than that stat. Not sure whether you are insinuating that people here are old, have no sense of humour (misspelled that for your pleasure) or they don't understand British humor, which I thoroughly enjoy. If you are jabbing at those here with a seriousness that would make the pope seem like a party animal, then I am with you. I get up each day with a pup tent and a smile on my face. Life is short and if you take it too seriously it can be shorter.I want my tombstone to read: He laughed, he loved, he lived, and he liked to fart in the church pew because the long wood bench reverberated, causing that deep base tone he loved. laugh laugh laugh bigsmile
