Wouldn't it still be rude if someone was talking crap in a language you could understand? At least they are respecting you enough to keep it to themselves.

It's just the fact that they have to keep it secret. I could care less what they are talking about. I don't like secrets at all. To me, if you have to keep something from me, you are not respecting me. If you have to discuss something privately, fine...but do it in a private setting. Not in front of 30 people whom you are currently supposed to be interacting with.

I dont mind as long as they cannot speak Much english as we get a lot of people here who struggle with english when they are visiting,
But I wouldnt like it if they could speak english and did it so I wouldnt understand, that I would find rude.
I would probably start talking to my children in sign language just so they could see what it was like. Hmmmm and to have a laugh.

That's too funny Josie! If I were more fluent in sign language, I would totally do that with some of the people here!laugh

I grew up in a three language household, and learned the better part of three others in my life.

If people are speaking in a language you can't understand because it's their native tongue and they are more comfortable with it that's one thing.

If they are speaking about you and don't want you to understand, that's a completely different thing altogether. It's rude and ignorant.

But how would you know, if they were ever speaking about you?

You just wouldn't.

And besides, I really wouldn't want to know what they were saying. Being paranoid about what people are are saying is silly and childish.

I just want to take a poll to see how people feel about this.

Do you consider someone speaking in a foreign language around you the same thing as whispering? Or at least just as bad/rude? I mean, either way, you don't know what they are saying...

How would you feel about it if they were doing it in your own household right in front of you?

happened to me many times and I thought nothing of it

if there was something that I needed to know an english speaker told me

sometimes I understood anyway

and I have done it too

and thought nothing of it

if anything it's kinda fun to hear other languages

My dads a linguist and mom is fairly multi lingual so growing up especially around birthdays and holidays they would slip into either latin, spanish, or german when talking about something we weren't supposed to know about. Used to irritate the hell out of me.grumble mad laugh

yes the latter scenario is rude, but u can't control it so why sweat the small stuff

if someone is gonna trash talk what difference does it make what language it's in - can't make a silk purse from a sow's ear

my FB page is filled with other alphabet's (characters) and languages - love it!!

not necessarily, people dont HAVE to whisper, they can CHOOSE to,,,

but people dont always CHOOSE the language they are speaking, it is often just a matter of what they are comfortable/fluent with

I dont consider it rude unless it seems apparent that they are doing it specifically to exclude me, like if they were just speaking perfect english and then just SWITCHED to some other language

I have a daughter-in-law to be who is Thai and she will do this in thai restaurants - I think she gets homesick to speak her native tongue

and it's really fun to listen & so cute how she teaches my son thai words

and I know how it feels cuz I lived in Germany in a rural area where there was no englische Sprachen - it's like a breath of cool air to get to speak ur own language a minute or two

I could care less what they are talking about, seriously. It's just the fact that they are in my home doing it. They are both American. English is their first language. They just do it because they don't want to step outside to talk about confidential issues. The fact that they are doing it while they are supposed to be interacting with us is what kills me. I think someone must've complained because it hasn't happened recently.
