I am a fairly shy guy, and i notice that after i leave a store or gas station; and i noticed a girl i thought could have been single and interested, I wonder what i could have said to strike up a good conversation. Then i drive away, wishing i said something and she is gone

I think that knowing you should have said something is a good start.. I'm sure you'll get some good advice here.. Sorry I don't have any, I try to stay in the background....

hello works pretty good, for starters... they like confidence, and mostly any small talk will be ok... ask her something about her car, dog, anything to get her to talk... open ended questions are the best, don't ask her things that have a yes or no answer. I hope that will help you. good luck

i noticed you said store or gas station. first off, those gals are going to be hit on at least 50 times a day. I know from experience.

the men I noticed were those who were always polite, addressed me by my name and instead of saying things like "marlboros" then throwing the money on the counter..they would hand me the money and treat me as a person and not a flunky

if you see a girl there you might wanna get to know...always be polite and say thank you and please..and she will notice, she will see you are not just treating her like some servant.. next.. begin small talk, fun banter. she will remember you I promise.
after awhile she is going to view you as one of her fav customers and be happy when you visit and then you are on her sweet side.

saying hello and being personal goes a long way...you will be a joy instead of just another customer.

if you take my advice you must invite me to your wedding.

Oh my gosh, I know exactly how you feel!! I was getting gas one evening and this guy came out of the store... Anyway I wish I had said something. We waved, lol. I shouldn't have driven away but what can you do? Starting with saying something like hey how are ya doin? If they are interested they will want to keep talking :) If not they avoid long conversation and walk away. Sounds simple but man, I wish it were an exact science.

^^^ Julie's advice is good for both of you. Politeness, laughs, and real conversation works on guys too.

I'm a bit shy. I don't approach many women. I've been approached by a good number of women though. The reason why people are shy is often just because they don't know what to say. Maybe they aren't a big talker. Maybe they don't like talking about themselves.

What it boils down to is this: start a conversation, and make them laugh. Often a quip that segues the conversation works really well. It makes them feel comfortable so they open up a bit. Maybe you notice something she bought that reminds you of something funny. If she doesn't walk away, then maybe follow it up with another story, slightly similar that gets her talking.

You don't always have to introduce yourself right away. It's awkward, and leaves little room for interesting dialogue. You can always introduce yourself after s/he has opened up a bit. It's just like meeting any other person.

In the restaurant business, I've met a lot of people this way, of both sexes. On top of that, they remember and talk to me even if I don't see them for months. If it wasn't for working in restaurants, I would sit by myself in a corner without talking to anyone. The business broke me out of that habit, and I am much happier for it.

Talking solely from experience, when a guy asks me for my name and number immediately, I don't give it. It sometimes makes me feel like he's demanding the information, as if it's his right to have it. The smooth gorilla gave me movie titles I loved and a lengthy conversation started from there and is still ongoing. :)

Try having a back-up plan. Write a list of stuff you wanna talk about.

Everything starts with hello...........nobody likes cheesy pick up lines....

Myself I guess I will miss out on them for I'm not one that will approach someone at a gas station or store I just seem to stand back and gawk.....surprised

Say "hi" and something about her car, dog etc, like moe said and if everything seems to be going okay.....give her YOUR name and number and let her know you would like to talk to her more....if she smiles but looks scared, tell her to block her number first until she feels comfortable talking to you.....

(and the low slung convertible isn't a bad idea either. )

I tend to be a bit of a septic.

If the girl looks dateable, or better, then she is not single.

On the other hand, if a girl is single, or not single, is not possible to say.
But generally, the more off-handish and cruel they are, the more single. The ones in relationships and marriages are cool, relaxed, not anxious.

If a girl looks single to me and I can establish her singlehood solely on how she fills her car's tank at a station, then I know I seriously need to get my pattern recognition checked, or else my interpretive faculties on human behaviour.

Next time this happens, put in an ad into "missed encounters" at Craigslist or Kijiji, and watch the replies come flooding your box.

It is even harder to establish if a guy is single by watching him come out of a gas station's pay wicket and wave at a girl.

It may mean so many things!! One being that his girlfriend's mother is behind the unsuspecting girl, in line with the two, filling her car.

Another one of the more obvious explanations is that he is a serial murderer, not caught yet, or, -- less frequently and less likely -- a womanizer, married, taken, or single.

He may also be gay. Look at his clothing -- impeccable? Not a speck of dust? No signs of breakfast from that day? Then he is gay. He approaches women coz he likes the attention, or their money. Whatever.

"Blessed are the cheese-makers for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." Explanation: only a meek person would approach a girl with a cheezy line. So cheezy line users are meek, who, in turn, necessarily go to heaven.

Hmmm I had a man park next to me and he got out and asked me how I kept the paint on my car so good, plus a million other questions that he asked, which I happily answered, had no idea he was trying to get to know me until my daughter pointed it out. then I was very embarrassed as i had absolutly no idea.
so maybe the first question should be Hi I am single are you.

NOOOOO!!! That's the worst you could do.

Girls don't really like shy guys who say meek things to them at gas stations.

But girls DO like Kennedys who are confidently driving some very fast car, low-swung, sports.

So try to act like, and make her believe that you are, a Kennedy.

Success guaranteed.
