I volunteered at a humane society. And they brought in stray pits that wre the nicest dogs you could meet. It's the way they are raised and treated. That goes for all breeds.

The only time you hear about a pitbull is one attacks someone, there a tens of thousands of pitbulls and you only hear the few that bites someone. Those that do bite need to have their humans looked at to see what they have done to make such an aggressive dog. People seem to forget that when 101 dalmations came out in the 90's that there was a rash of people being attacked and bitten by dalmations due to puppy mills cranking out dogs that were defective due to poor breeding which sadly is the case with most pure breed dogs. All dogs, even those crappy lil overbread dogs that shake and piss all the time bite and can cause serious damage if the bite is in the right area.

Exactly. You don't hear about all the nice, friendly, loving pits in the news. I've known a few people who have had them and they were nothing but friendly, happy dogs.

I have friends who have a pit mix who is the most cuddly dog ever. Very sweet.

While I do not feel I am qualified to answer in detail since I am a fairly recent Pit Bull owner/lover, I will impart my own experiences with my beautiful, loveable, SWEET adopted Pit Bull, Merlin. This dog was found wandering around my place of employment a month or so ago, starving and sorely neglected. And of course, being that he was a Pit Bull, most everyone ignored him and were afraid of him. I couldn't do that to him. I walked right up to him, offered him the back of my hand to smell me and get to know me and he's been my baby boy every since. While I'm sure this dog was meant to be someone's guard dog and from the looks of him was probably abused and beaten, at the very least, starved half to death, he is the sweetest, most loving dog!!! Now, I was a little concerned about taking him home since I have a 2 year old, male Bull Mastiff already and neither of them had been fixed. Aside from a couple of skirmishes in establishing dominance over the back yard (which my 2 year old Mastiff won and currently holds the title), this dog has been such a joy to our house!!! He is such a love hound and wants nothing more than to sit with his head in your lap and have you rub his head. My boyfriend has had 4 Pit Bulls in his lifetime and says this one is by far the sweetest and best natured but that all of them were friendly and only became mean when he or a member of his family were directly threatened by someone or something. Now I'm sorry but to me that is the definition of a "guard dog" and I get the same behaviour from my 9 year old, 11 pound Peek-a-poo too! She is more likely to bite someone than either of my huge male dogs!!!

So while I understand people's hesitation in owning a Pit Bull, I think it is totally unfair to the breed what has become of their reputation. Like any pet, you must first research and understand the breed and their personalities. Weigh the pros and cons of each breed and how they will fit into your household and family. As with any "guard dog", maintain control of his environment and be cautious of allowing strangers or children around without them being properly introduced to him. ALL dogs will react violently if they feel threatened or are put into a situation they are unfamiliar with and which may frighten them. Don't assume anything about a pet simply by their breed or looks. It's no different (to me) than judging people by looks or nationality.

That's awesome. I'm glad the dog found a good home with you :). flowerforyou

You don't because there are so few of them. And the media doesn't publish the "minority report." You don't hardly ever hear of agressive Bijon or Aussie Shepherd dog attacks. Yet PB defenders keep bringing up other breeds as being agressive, yet they won't acknowledge that the breed they are defending has a long history of agressive and offensive behavior.

This makes me very sad.
I've worked for a Humane Society in an area that had a great deal of dog fighters. We had dozens of these dogs at any given time waiting for their court dates just so they could soon after be euthanized for no fault of their own. Some were very vicious towards other dogs - they were bred and trained to be. But even 99% of those were wonderful to people! Very loving, very loyal, and very people-oriented. That's one reason why they make such "good" fighters. Because they so desperately want to make their owners happy! And in that group that were on death row, there were also many that loved other dogs, played very well together, and were even really good around cats and kids. But guess what? They were killed because they were Pit Bulls.
I've also gone on a cruelty investigation where someone had locked their pit bull in the bathroom of their trailer during the summer, and moved away. The dog had tried to scratch its way out, and bloody, broken nails were stuck to the door and walls. There was dried blood everywhere. And by the time someone called us in - months later - the poor girl could barely be peeled from the floor. I'm sure she was waiting for someone to rescue her! I'm sure she just kept thinking that if she made enough noise, or just tried hard enough, her loving owners would return and save her. But no one cared to. Maybe her breed had something to do with it, because
I never saw one single Maltese or Chihuahua in that situation, or anything even close to that.
And, from all the hundreds of animals I've worked with, the small dogs like Dachshunds and Chihuahuas are the biggest biters. And yes - they do damage. And as far as the worst biters - hands down it's cats! I love them, but they are first to bite, bite hard, and easily become infected and dangerous.
I hope that anyone who agrees with outlawing this breed realizes what a Nazi they sound like. And how ignorant they must be of the breed.
Cheers!

Nothing anyone says is going to make you change your mind about the breed, as you've already made up your mind. That's unfortunate.

statistically more people get bit by German Sheperds every year than by any other breed...

even a poodle can be turned into a vicious animal if its abused enough...pit bulls, rotties, and other work dogs get the brunt of the bad pr, because when they go bad the damage they can do is very serious...

as stated before, its not the dogs fault but the irresponsible owners that should be blamed and held accountable for the damages any animal commits.

you're a mean individual.
i hope a pitbull kills you.
since apparently that's all they go around doing.

I agree with you. Funny how Cesar Millan, the WORLD's top dog person even says how gentle they can be and that its the owners.
And if you take note the OP's handle is "Cats love me" so tells me cat lover not dog lover. Just a guess....

Why is it that pitbull owners keep clinging to the same sorry logic that their "cute adorable hell-hounds" are harmless and affectionate? These dogs are vicious, nasty, killers, and frankly, very offensive. Of all the 100s of breeds of dogs, why do people choose to adopt a pit-bull? I mean, what the hell? Isn't the name enough to deter someone from adopting such an objectionable canine? Or how about its track record, or behavioral tendencies? I say it's time that communities all accross America start making this breed illegal, too much harm has been done already by this breed.

Bullsh it any dog is mean if its mistreated or trained to be.......and any dog is sweet if trained to be and treated well including pitbulls.....period....

Hey, not all of us cat owners think that dog owners shouldn't be able to have the dog of their choice.

To the OP. I can kind of understand where your coming from, but then there is the other side that knows there is more to this story then just the dogs. One thing I hate is how some people don't have the space for dogs so the ended up being locked in there house, small yards or stupid cages. Or people gets these dogs because they look cool and I want to fit in like the rest. UM HELLO laugh Then people wonder why some dogs react the way they do. No harm meant here, but I don't like dogs that much because most are what I call ( MUTTS ) mixed breeds and you don't really know what your getting. I raised 4 wolves and I bet people can run with that onelaugh although, I had the land, the space where they could run free and be themselves. The mother was full timber wolf and all 4 of them were one of the most loving and smartest animals I ever had. So looking at all this. WE are the ones if you are to say. made the dogs. It's not the dogs fault. Just like everything else in this would man or women made. There always going to be a price to pay.
