Topic: What is the first slasher flick?

There's no question that John Carpenter's Halloween is the biggest influence on the modern slasher film, but it wasn't the first. Some say Hitchcock's Psycho...I've never looked at this as a true slasher film, but it definitely was one of the big influences on the sub-genre. I've also heard the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre labeled as a slasher film, but again I just don't see it as one(just my opinion of course), though it does have elements. There's also Mario Bava's Bay Of Blood(even Friday the 13th Part 2 copied the death scenes from this film). The Giallo also had a big influence on slashers.... I do consider Black Christmas a slasher.

Now, I haven't seen it, but this film I've seen mentioned several times as being the forerunner to the slasher film- Thirteen Women from 1932: it tells the story of an old college sorority whose former members are set against one another by a vengeful peer, seeking penance for the prejudice they bestowed on her because of her mixed race heritage.(from Wiki)

Yes, from what I know, Thirteen Women (1932), is by far, the first among its kind. Nothing else came close until the 1960's (unless you consider And Then There Were None in 1945) where Psycho, Dementia 13, Blood Feast, Blood and Black Lace, Peeping Tom, and others like it followed. Of course, at the risk of sounding biased, I must say that the first proper slasher film was still Black Christmas. laugh

So besides Black Christmas, what pre-Halloween films do you consider slashers?

Savage Weekend(which was filmed in '76)

The Redeemer: Son Of Satan '78(Released several months before Halloween)

I actually had time to ponder about this today. laugh And I think a movie even earlier than Thirteen Women would be Hitchcock’s The Lodger from 1927. [(IMDb)A landlady suspects her new lodger is the madman killing women in London.]

Another early slasher contender is Siodmak’s The Spiral Staircase from 1946. [(IMDb)A serial killer (circa 1916) is targeting women with 'afflictions'; one night during a thunderstorm, mute Helen feels menaced.]

Drive-In Massacre '76 definitely has slasher elements to it. Young couples making out in their cars slaughtered by someone with a samurai sword.

Twitch of the Death Nerve aka Bay Of Blood, I think is more slasher than giallo, though it seems some people think if it's Italian it's giallo. And like I said earlier Friday The 13th Part 2 copied the death scenes.

The Man In The Attic which is another version of The Lodger is included on the 50 Movie Set- Chilling Classics. It has Jack Palance, and Frances Bavier(Aunt Bea from The Andy Griffith Show) It's pretty good, mostly thanks to Palance.

I DVR'd it, but it looks like a copy of Bravo's Scariest Movie Moments, and just like Bravo it will only focus on the mainstream.

There's a new upcoming Evil Dead Game App for iPhone. The game will be released later this year. The characters you see in the trailer are actual characters from the game. The developers promise lots of gore.

It was good. I did like seeing Lucky McKee and Ti West pop up in the interviews.

Neat! I've never seen those before. It's like Davey and Goliath, or Gumby gone bad!
