Thanks for the link. I guess I have Genophobia, which has kept me from getting into any serious relationship. It was neat to read all the different phobias and to realize I was not scared of as many things as I thought of. I did place the context of a phobia as being an extreme degree of fear.

Here's some of the stranger ones.

Arachibutyrophobia- Fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of the mouth.
Automatonophobia- Fear of ventriloquist's dummies, animatronic creatures, wax statues
Bolshephobia- Fear of Bolsheviks.
Cathisophobia- Fear of sitting.
Cibophobia- Fear of food.

I could go on and on, but that might bother someone with Epistemophobia- (Fear of knowledge).

When Franklin D. Roosevelt said, "We have nothing to fear but fear itself", he was referring to the self-fulfilling condition phobophobia, the fear of phobias (themselves).

Phobophobia is an intense fear of something that poses no actual danger. While adult sufferers realize that these fears are irrational, they often find that facing, or even thinking about facing, the feared situation brings on a panic attack or severe anxiety.

Defined as "a persistent, abnormal and unwarranted fear of phobias", each year this surprisingly common phobia causes countless people needless distress. You are not the only one to suffer from this phobia. Most sufferers are surprised to learn that they are far from alone in this surprisingly common, although often unspoken, phobia.

Known by a number of names - Phobophobia and Fear of Phobias being the most common - the problem often significantly impacts the quality of life. It can cause panic attacks and keep people apart from loved ones and business associates. Symptoms typically include shortness of breath, rapid breathing, irregular heartbeat, sweating, feeling sick, shaking, nausea and overall feelings of dread, inability to speak or think clearly, a fear of becoming mad or losing control, a sensation of detachment from reality or a full blown anxiety attack, although everyone experiences the problem in their own way and may have different symptoms. The actual phobia manifests itself in different ways. Some sufferers experience it almost all the time, others just in response to direct stimuli. Everyone has their own unique formula for when and how to feel bad.

There are a lot of scary things lurking out there, so are coitophobia (fear of sex), gephyrophobia (fear of crossing a bridge), teratophobia (fear of monsters), triskaidekaphobia (fear of the number 13), pogonophobia (fear of beards) and many other phobias.

Like all fears and phobias, phobophobia is created by the unconscious mind as a protective mechanism. At some point in your past, there was likely an event linking phobias and emotional trauma. Whilst the original catalyst may have been a real-life scare of some kind, the condition can also be triggered by myriad, benign events like movies, TV, or perhaps seeing someone else experience trauma.

Though a variety of potent drugs are often prescribed for phobophobia, side effects and/or withdrawal symptoms can be severe. Moreover, drugs do not "cure" phobophobia or any other phobia. At best they temporarily suppress the symptoms through chemical interaction.
