Laziness on the part of the individual. Public schools graduate a greater number of people that can read at a acceptable level than those that can't. Reading and writting is a skill which must be acquired and practiced. It dosent take much in the why of smarts to see when the rest of the world-TV, media, work uses a different language style and to accquire it.

Also knowing your own limitations and using technology like Spellcheck is a help too.

1: What are your qualifications? 2: Ah. Well... I attended Juilliard... I'm a graduate of the Harvard business school. I travel quite extensively. I lived through the Black Plague and had a pretty good time during that. I've seen the EXORCIST ABOUT A HUNDRED AND SIXTY-SEVEN TIMES, AND IT KEEPS GETTING FUNNIER EVERY SINGLE TIME I SEE IT... NOT TO MENTION THE FACT THAT YOU'RE TALKING TO A DEAD GUY... NOW WHAT DO YOU THINK?!? You think I'm qualified?

intellect doesn't just come in the form of being a capable speller.

there are all sorts of people who rank higher than me in smarts, but i bet i outspell many of them. bigsmile

i achieved high academic results, but much of it was 'memory store and dump' - that doesn't automatically make me intelligent either.

common sense goes a long way for me in determining someone's intellect, not just their book knowledge.

I think everybody should have brains.
Really, life is too short to go around without brains.

I, Personally boycott all spell check programs.

It really p*sses me off when they try to correct my name "krupa" with crap, crapper, crappier or crappiest.

So, I am willing to take my chances just freeballing it. (In a venacular context)

Is a "box of rocks" smarter than a cheese grater, or about the same?

Obviously spelling well doesn't equate to intelligence. The verbal and written language are just two different mediums of communication to express your intelligence, or lack thereof in some cases. Some people perform better in one medium as opposed to the other.

My son has dyslexia and can't spell a lick, (and I mean that literally...he'd probably spell it lik!) but yet he's above average intelligence and converses at the level of a 30 yr old. (He was given all sorts of tests because of his "disability".)

I'd PREFER someone who could spell just because I'm in college and writing tons of papers. It'd be nice to have someone to proofread them. I've found spell check to be rather useless in that sense. A good pair of eyes is far better than a computer program, in my opinion.

Does the guy get eliminated from the possibile dating pool just because he can't spell? No way. Conversely, I wouldn't start dating a human dictionary without a personality either. Spelling is neither a deal maker or deal breaker, it's just something that would come in handy in my situation.

...Here's what I'm thinking:
"Are You Smarter Than A Cheese Grater?"

How silly are you.
A person can't be sharper than a cheese grater.
They would be all over cuts.
However.
A cheese grater with a boob handle..plenty of contestants.
All willing to prove your point :-)

Lex,

You must be frustrated today.

Well, actually, when I'm bored, I just make up stuff to complain about. Then I wait and see how many people get offended by it. Trying to see if there's a way to turn it into a reality show.

If you do, will you be hiring dancers in goat shorts or do you have a new concept in mind?

The dancers will come over and do my laundry. The TV show will just be a panel of snarky judges making rude comments about various cheese graters. If we get Kraft as a sponsor, it's a no-brainer. Which is really what this thread is about, anyway.
