The thread title is a perfect example of the person u see before U.biggrin

I mean I had a pet cow back home. How "Unique" can a person get?

I figured it out. It's that little word "unmatched" in the definition.

No mutual matches. On a dating site. Yup, I qualify, therefore I am "unique".

There ya have it. We are all typically unique. Another oxymoron to add to my list.

Thanks Lex.

I really think this is just another instance of "Law of Opposites."

It seems that the people who are most concerned about being perceived as unique are actually -- sad but true -- the least unique of all.

My concern is with the idea that someone feels they NEED to SAY they're unique. Self-assessments are notoriously inaccurate, in my experience -- and if someone feels the need to define themselves as being different from everyone else (isn't that what "unique" would have to mean, in the end?), then they're only displaying an inability to define themselves on their OWN terms.

In other words, I don't want to know how you're not like everybody else -- I want to know who you are, you yourself -- the people you're stacking yourself up against are irrelevant. It's a context issue.

Would you settle for quasi-unique? Or uniquish? Overall common with some unique-like qualities? laugh

More likely I'd settle for someone who didn't feel the need to make that sort of comparison in the first place. Being overly concerned about coming across as unique is certainly not unique.

Is this one of those damned if you do, damned if you don't deals?

Can't SAY you're unique. Better to DISPLAY why you're unique if I'm following you here.

But then if you display your "uniqueness", you come off to those reading your profile as being "concerned about being perceived as unique"...which makes you the least unique of all.

I'm so confused.noway

That's why I claim that I'm just your ordinary, average, run of the mill girl. Or something along those lines. Even though I still think I'm rather unique. Actually, I prefer the term atypical.glasses

Exactly. I can say I'm a large green sofa, but that doesn't make it true.

I see this used in 92.3% of all profiles I read -- "I am the most unique person you'll ever meet." Then they go on to talk about the beach, the little black dress/jeans paradox, the glass being half full, the mandatory "laid back and easy going" commentary, "I like to go out or stay in," "I love my friends and family," and the ever-popular "I'm a single mother of three kids and THEY ARE MY WORLD."

I was raised in an environment where "unique" meant something other than "I am exactly the same as every other boring shlub in the world who is too lazy to write three original sentences about myself." Words change, over time, though, and it's entirely possible (it isn't really, but the appearance of diplomacy can't really hurt here, probably) that "unique" now means something quite the opposite of what it originally was intended to convey.

After all, we have terms like "inflammable" and "flammable" that sound like they should be opposites but probably aren't, unless those have been changed, too, while I wasn't looking.

So, I looked up the definition of "unique" in a couple of the on line dictionaries, and I got this: "radically distinctive and without equal; being the only one of its kind; unequaled, unparalleled or unmatched."

Well, I think we can identify the problem here. The people who are claiming to be "unique" have no idea what the word actually means.

But I suppose that's to be expected, seeing as how most of them claim to be "hot" and "sexy," too....!!

I agree Lex I think people using the word unique to describe themselves have no idea what the word means. If they do understand the true definition they are very egotistical unless they have a ton of information to justify their claim.

Isn't this all really a bad cliche though? I don't even know if any of them are actually TRYING to sell themself out there, just slap on a nice shade of green and call it new. But not us, Lex, no, we are above the influence...well above the influence.smokin

Yup, it's a very bad cliche, on the order of "I love my friends and family" or "Anything you want to know, you'll have to ask."

Just something they saw in every other profile they looked at, and thought it would be a good idea to follow the herd.

My point, though, is who cares? Why go out of your way to try to convince people that you're "unique"? Why does it even matter if they think you're "unique" or not?

I mean, the way I figure it, I have some things in common with other people and a lot of things that aren't. I don't consider myself "unique," say, in the way a guy with three heads and green batwings would be unique. It isn't something I strive for. I don't have any particular NEED to be unique, I don't think of myself that way, necessarily, and it really makes no difference what anyone else thinks.

But for someone to claim to be unique in their profile, and then just prove the opposite by everything else they write, well, that just strikes me as self-defeating.

My dad's pet cow, Cher, was 25 yrs old when she passed away. He had delivered her, and she was his first cow on the farm.

My 8 boys, and a girl are 2 yrs old now.
