I often get emails where the person is asking if we can chat. Or asking if we can be friends. Or even asking if he can ask me questions. When I ask if that's how they start conversations in real life, they say no.

So, why ask to do these things? Why not just start chatting and see where things go?

Insecurities? Not wanting to bother or offend? Looking for reassurance that they're worth talking to?

Maybe they are just being polite and offering you a get out of jail free card if you respond no. As they don't have a feel for you they are uncertain how to approach you.

Have heard millions of people use it as an ice breaker, may I ask you a question (duh, in all reality ya just did) lol

They are trying to speak to you with out being intrusive. Which is silly. If youi didn't want to get email from people here you wouldn't be here.

I think it's too polite. I'm on a site where people communicate via forums and emails. Why ask if we can chat, rather than starting a conversation? Most people don't do it that way when starting a conversation in real life.

Hummm what is funny the ones that I find that tend to start off asking if they can be your friend & only asking for you to tell them about you tend to be the scammers. For soon to follow behind just a few e-mails they are trying to get you to go to yahoo as well...whoa

Makes me wonder if some know what a normal conversation is anymore. Internet or no internet most start off with a hello how are ya not 100 questions....slaphead

Or not wanting to wait to bother to offend??

I get it to, lots of us do. I like it even better when it is can we chat somewhere else (Yahoo etc) after maybe one sentence. Those guys are scary.

But I will agree with others here too, maybe he's just trying to be polite, not push you....LOL sorry, asking if we can friends??? Well let's chat awhile and see were it goes...like in life!

You have to take into consideration that in real life, people can SEE what you are currently doing,,if you are busy,,etc,,,,

Just because someone is signed on to this site doesnt mean they arent in the middle of some other web activity. I know I never bother to sign off regardless of where I am or what I am doing. I think it is just a sign of politeness, in place of asking
'r u busy'.

Yep, I prefer people just to start a conversation if they want to. I'm usually up for chatting if I'm online.
