I just heard this on TV and it cracked me up.... think there is any truth to this statement? Back in the day, it was often said "To beat the Establishment you have to _become_ the Establishment". So now you have most media being largely run by Conservatives who someone fooled the cookie-cutter sheeple into thinking those same Conservatives are using that media they run to protect the sheeple from a liberal MSM scarecrow. Ah, the ancient curse: "May your children live in interesting times." -Kerry O. |

AS soon as I get the 'official' definition of a 'liberal'... I will know for sure,, but based on what I found to be the definitions for liberal: 2 a : marked by generosity : openhanded <a liberal giver> b : given or provided in a generous and openhanded way <a liberal meal> c : ample, full 3 obsolete : lacking moral restraint : licentious 4 : not literal or strict : loose <a liberal translation> 5 : broad-minded; especially : not bound by authoritarianism, orthodoxy, or traditional forms That would be a hippy, I guess A definition of hippie would be needed for the comparison... |

Are there really any hippies today? I mean not the "old" hippies, but "new" hippies? there are they call themselves the "Rainbow Families" I've met a lot of them off and on over the years and made it to a couple of Rainbow Gatherings in California and Texas http://www.starsrainbowrideboard.org/welcomehome_mirror/rainbow/ |

Maybe you need a better definition of liberal:
broad: showing or characterized by broad-mindedness; "a broad political stance"; "generous and broad sympathies"; "a liberal newspaper"; "tolerant ... having political or social views favoring reform and progress tolerant of change; not bound by authoritarianism, orthodoxy, or tradition a person who favors a political philosophy of progress and reform and the protection of civil liberties big: given or giving freely; "was a big tipper"; "the bounteous goodness of God"; "bountiful compliments"; "a freehanded host"; "a handsome allowance"; "Saturday's child is loving and giving"; "a liberal backer of the arts"; "a munificent gift"; "her fond and openhanded grandfather" a person who favors an economic theory of laissez-faire and self-regulating markets Most of us who favor change are liberals - we are tired of the status quo. Has nothing to do with smoking pot like hippies. Whoever said today's liberals are yesterday's hippies is anti-change and trying to damage any progressive movements in this country. |

for as many people as you talk to you'll get a different definition of "liberal" and for "hippie"
for some both is a putdown, for some its a badge of honor I think the original statement "Topic: Today's Liberals Are Yesterday's Hippie's" was intended as a put down but its not entirely true |

Another sweeping generalization.... |

I was too young to be a hippi. But, they don't come any more liberal than me. My first choice for president was Dennis Kucinich! I voted for him in the Dem primaries. But, I knew he was too far left to get the nomination.

I agree with quiet that there will be as many different ideas of what a hippy or liberal are as there are people you ask,,but I was basing solely on the MERRIAM WEBSTER definitions...here is hippy a usually young person who rejects the mores of established society (as by dressing unconventionally or favoring communal living) and advocates a nonviolent ethic; broadly : a long-haired unconventionally dressed young person I think that slightly correlates to definition five of liberal. I basically think of hippy as the other extreme to extremism. When I think of extremist I think those who say everyone should be like me or die. When I think of hippy I think of those who say everyone should just feel free and be themselves and do whatever feels good to them. |
