Funniest thing about that statement? Is that most of today's RIGHT WING NUT BAGS are ALSO ex-hippies. I've known plenty of hippies that went in each direction.
I've found that there's more continuity in style, than in point of view. People who have the desire to be totally RIGHT about everything can just as easily go the direction of wanting to force their ideas down every one else's throats, as to champion individual freedoms.
It's the same way in the world of religions: so many of them start out to bring freedom and grace and insight into peoples lives...and then someone gets caught up in the idea that "if we really know this is the best way for everyone to live, isn't it our duty to MAKE them live right?" and the persecutions begin, all in the name of making the world a better place.
