My parents just had another car accident...my mom had one about a month ago...now my dad. He also bumps into things a lot....

They are old now...my mom is a young 87 and my dad is 85. My question is...When are you to old to drive anymore? I just don't want them to die in a crash or hurt anyone elsc...

I think we should all go back to horse drawn buggies.

I think that'd be awesome, as long as I don't have to smell the horse.laugh

Take the keys away from them. We just had an eighty year old run into another eighty something year old on the north side. One of them is dead.

When did this happen? I don't know the details of my parents accident yet...just that they are ok...They live on the northwest side...

I'd suggest you contact your local police, or perhaps your own auto insurance company for advice. This has to be a common enough concern that both will have good advice for you on how to procede to protect your folks from themselves.

I know its hard to decide on this one.u don't want to hurt them, sometimes they feel like there freedom is being taken away from them.but on the other hand your just looking out for them and for others

the will to drive is not easily surrendered ...drugs/medication helps making the decision to giving up the keys easier..i.e. physically/mentally incapacitated by drugs/medication

Well my ex mother in-law is 86 now and we all stepped up about 2 years ago and told her it was time for her to quit driving. Her site was getting too bad and we did not want her driving around with Kaitlynn my granddaughter in the car with her. She complied even though at times she thinks she can still see good enough to drive she has not drove since then.

We also made sure that the car she did drive is no longer there for her to take that chance.

It is better to be safe then sorry.

Most people of that age are on numerous meds and a danger to the roads. I would only hope that my son takes my license away at 70 the latest.

Take them to have their eyes tested,an if they don't pass, they can't drive.

The laws are different in each state...Here in Texas, if you haven't had a ticket or an accident , you don't have to take a eye test or driving test to renew your liscense..They sent my dad one at the age of 89....the local police wouldn't help convince him he no longer needed to drive,( we lived in a very small town)...and his own eye doctor was willing to state that his vision was good enough to drive.

It's hard to be the one to say...you can no longer drive...you are taking the last of their freedom away...and it's hard for them to accept that. They have been the parent for so long....now we're ordering them around and grounding them...It hurts on many different levels..

It's not only eyes, but medications as well!!

Reaction time is also a significant factor.

I think it should be a federal law, that when people reach a certain age, maybe 70 ?? that everyone, needs to retake the drivers license test, the whole thing, written AND driving.
