Topic: Old people driving cars???? | |
---|---|
It's sad, but true. I thought about it for a long time...certain hours they would be allowed to drive...not during rush hour, schools when kids are going in or out. Maybe if someone had a ounce of ability in our govt...they could set yearly or twice yearly testing for those over a certain age.. and not charge but a sm. minimal fee. I wasn't allowed to drive for years due to eplipsy that wasn't able to be controlled. Wasn't so bad...biked it, walked and saw alot of stuff you normally miss when being the driver.

I think it should be a federal law, that when people reach a certain age, maybe 70 ?? that everyone, needs to retake the drivers license test, the whole thing, written AND driving. just my .02 Hehe... I hope that balancing act wasn't part of your driving test. That would just be cruel, man. |

It depends on the driver. My Dad is 82 and and excellent driver.
When they start running into things though definitely time to set them up with driving alternatives. It is way easier if they don't feel stranded. Most cities or counties have special buses for seniors and it is a simple process to sign them up for it. Usually info at any senior center under Parks and Recreation. Some communities are actually starting to offer bus service between school deliverys. Setting up a standard pick up for weekly grocery shopping with a cab company is a big help getting them to transition and willingly give up the keys. Many offer gift cards. Hireing a part time chauffer can be a good alternative. They know what days they are available. This is excellent part time job for mothers who have kids in school. Talking with a pastor or community college job counselor can help you find someone. Make sure their vehical is safe and insured for this purpose wheather it is your parents or the drivers. Regular insurance will not cover it you may have to get a rider for your policy. Having the Swan truck drop buy with frozen entrees. Some senior programs will deliver groceries. Many of the chain pharmacycies will deliver small amounts of groceries also. SafeWay, Albertsons, Publix, Costco allow for food to be ordered on line. Also Meals on Wheels is great. Many older people just want socialization. Taking them to church or Senior Center is often enough outside of medical appointments. Many Doctors will do home visits for Seniors if asked. |

uhm... when they decide they do not want to drive anymore. Young people crash their cars too, and there is no discussion of taking young peoples license away... I know lots of people who cant drive well, and wreck their cars... but there seems to be some BIAS toward the elderly...
I would like to see the demographics / age distribution of accidents - I would be surprised to see that the number of accidents are skewed toward the elderly... My personal guess would be that the statistics would show that young male drivers are most likely to cause / be in a car accident... Leave the old people alone... $.02 |

Young people that drive badly- get better in time with practice.
Old people who drive badly- WILL ONLY GET WORSE. |

When you are eligible to start recieving Social Security checks, then it should be a state mandate to take annual road tests for driving proficiency.

My parents just had another car accident...my mom had one about a month ago...now my dad. He also bumps into things a lot.... They are old now...my mom is a young 87 and my dad is 85. My question is...When are you to old to drive anymore? I just don't want them to die in a crash or hurt anyone elsc... Glad to hear your parents are ok, but I think we should all be retested periodically to make sure we are able to drive. |
