That was really nice of him... I consider random acts of kindness like chain letters(I hate the email kind)... After thanking him

You MUST pass it on to a complete stranger! You'd be surprised how contagious it is... then everyone can make this world a better place.

It's amazing that such a small gesture of kindness can have such a huge impact. After all, it not only made the OP feel warm and fuzzy, it made all of us she shared it with feel hopeful and happy as well. Like skipping a stone off water, it creates little ripples spreading everywhere! Thanks for sharing!

How true...how true! Anything you do for this person will be seen by him as an act of kind graciousness...I'm sure of that. Simply show him that you care. Thanks for sharing..."Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus."happy flowerforyou (and that spirit lives in most of us)!

So we have a real "Love Fest" going on here, everybody feeling warm and fuzzy, going out today to spread the love. 'Paying it Forward' random acts of kindness and all.

What about the theft of her hat?
Where is our outrage?
Why aren't we crabbing and complaining how rotten the world is?
How IndnPrncs's faith in her fellow man was lessened because of the theft?

In the larger scheme of things it's just a hat. One gained, then stolen, then replaced. What is the big deal? Maybe a total of $25 involved.

I am always amazed when people can take life's misfortunes both large and small and turn them around into something good. Big misfortunes bring out huge gestures of concern and caring from people, smaller ones bring out lesser gestures. BUT, the true worth and value of those gestures are truly above monetary value. The true meaning of the efforts and gestures can bring us hope and faith in the goodness that is always there in the hearts of our fellow man.

Thank You for sharing this IndnPrncs.

Joy what and awesome story to read first this morning. It just goes to show those that you least expect will bring a smile to someones face. And in return that smile was spread by the story you related....

Hummm what to give him you could do a fruit basket sure or if the next time you see him look to see if he wears a scarf or gloves it is starting to get a bit chilly. Ya know there is nothing like putting on a scarf or a pair of gloves knowing that each time it reminds you of the person they came from. As well as the good deed you did yourself..........bigsmile

There are kind-hearted people in lots of places. A number of years ago, when I was a police officer, I investigated a suicide case in which a woman died, leaving a husband and two young children behind. Her death occurred two days before Christmas.

These people were poor. Below dirt poor. Even if mom hadn't died, I suspect those kids weren't going to be having much of a Christmas.

So, on the day before Christmas me and some of the people in my department took it upon ourselves to start a collection to help this family. I figured if we could raise a hundred dollars the family might be able to have a decent meal and buy a few presents for the kids. We went into bars and told the story, then passed around my uniform hat. We went to department stores and asked for a couple toys. We went to grocery stores and asked for some food.

Now, please understand, this story is not about ME or my fellow cops. It's about the people who shared what they had so someone else could have a better, although still sad, Christmas. At the end of the day I was able to give that family $1500 and I had a patrol car full of toys and food for them.

There ARE good people in the world. Sometimes we just don't see it enough.

The other day when I came home from work I ended up chit chatting with a neighbor. He's an elderly gentlemen, a very nice, professor type... In our conversation we discussed 9/11 and I mentioned that at one time I had had a NYPD hat from ground zero and it was stolen out of my car by a valet. It was something that meant a lot to me and had bummed me out a bit....

The next morning I went to my car and as I was preparing to back out I noticed an NYPD hat on my window...

It made me misty eyed.. Such a kind gesture for him to try to replace something the was very special to me...

I continue to stand by my belief that "most" people are truly kind, caring and compassionate...

Probably a "nice guy."

Proceed to walk all over him.

Seriously, any returned favor will be greatly appreciated by him, for sure. Bake him some cookies - who doesn't like something homemade?

Thanks everyone... I do believe that the majority of people are goog... That never wavered, it did however remind me that even what seem like the smallest things can touch a person deeply and the fact that he understood and cared as an almost stranger how much that hat meant to me...

MM- I was not happy that someone stole my hat but in life stuff happens and it was what it was. I didn't hold a grudge just thought the valet that did it was a jerk that shouldn't be driving other people's cars b/c what else is he taking that he shouldn't be.

You're right is was only a "hat" but that's not the point, the point was that act of kindness no matter how small is still appreciated by the receiver, not to mention the thoughtfulness of the giver.. Large or small, kindness is kindness and even just a smile and a hello can affect a persons life in a positive way... That is what I try to remember, especially when I'm busy running to and fro every day...

Also, I never lost faith in my human man, I thought I had stated rather clearly that I it "confirmed" my belief that I've always maintained.. If not I apologzie for not being clear...

PoliteandFriendly- What you and those people did was wonderful...flowerforyou

You know, I see so many people looking out for themselves these days that I often get discouraged in the hope that people really want to do good things. Either that or when they see that you do something nice, they figure that you are someone they can take advantage of. And that is really sad.

Hearing stories like this though makes me feel good. At least we know there are those people out their who act out of the kindness of there hearts to do something for someone...and not look for anything in return. flowerforyou
