I prefer to support the troops in a manner that's tangible to them, and affects them directly by sending care packages and the like versus signing an online pledge. I feel like I'm actually doing something for them.

indeed it does not.

but maybe for you it doesn't though. a lot of soldiers and vets love good thoughts and wishes and prayers.

But what if some don't have the time or money.
When I was overseas we recieved letters and got videos of people just thanking us. That means just as much to us as monetary donations and time being voulenteered.

great. so you think signing a pledge is on par with letters and videos. i think it's simply an easy out. extremely few people have no time to spare. this pledge allows many to feel good and use their spare time on their snowboard and can pat themselves on the back for having supported the troops over after ski cocktails.

You say you don't tell others what to do, yet you look down on them for doing something you don't feel has much importance?

If it works for you then that's a great way to say thank you!

That's great that you do that and so do I. Signing a pledge is not a "bad" thing here.

Personally I don't even see why this is even an issue. spock

I agree that it's not a bad thing, and don't understand why it's an issue either. Just because it doesn't work for one person doesn't mean it shouldn't work for anyone else.

Your right. It's just that one made it an issue so I was defending those that cant help by donating money or time. They may be few but there are some. And if all you can do is sign a pledge or show them suppor by wishing them well, then that's great. Trust me I know. A hand shake and a welcome home, speak volumes to the troops.

I'd hug ya TJ - then use duct tape

Everyone support those that you can,
However you can
Whenever you can
Where ever you can
With whatever ya got

a kind word goes a long way
as does a smile
a signature
or an act

I'm sure there are many brave men and women that serve will appreciate any form of appreciation from the American people.

i look down on nobody. i posted in open forum that what this thread asks is not what i consider supporting the troops as i've every right to do. how is that putting somebody down? saying somebody's efforts are wasted in my view is hardly a put down. but you bring up an excellent point. why does anybody care about what i think? why the uproar? if you're proud of your efforts why even tell anybody? this thread could have been one post, that of the op. a million people could have read it, signed the pleadge and gone on with their day. maybe several did. why the discussion? nobody need check with me before signing a pledge. and i need check with nobody about voicing my opinion on it's affect on troop support as i see it.
