Prisons are required to provide medical treatment but not plastic surgery to inmates.

"He doesn't have any teeth. He doesn't have a roof in his mouth, and he's only got part of a nose."

No roof in the mouth is medical treatment to me.

I wonder what they mean by part of his nose. Can he breathe okay? Does he have sinuses? These are medical issues too.

"He doesn't have any teeth. He doesn't have a roof in his mouth, and he's only got part of a nose."

I think that not having a roof to your mouth and only part of a nose could be an issue. They didn't say if it's affecting his breathing.

That to me would fall under medical care. If it's just to make him handsome, it wouldn't be under medical care.

He obviously had a mental breakdown when he shot her and then himself in the face.

After fatally shooting his ex-girlfriend, Sam Verby, Daryl Strenke turned the gun on himself and blew off the lower part of his face.

Strenke, who is serving a 37-year sentence, was left unable to eat or talk normally.

my question, why should he be allowed to eat or talk normally??? He took away any normalcy from Sam Verby

I don't feel sorry for him, he did this to himself and murdered a woman, now he has to suffer the consequences.

What a moron.

Winx he can breath, and his food is pureed so yes he can eat.
So there are no medical issues with that.

I just saw Fran's pic. I hadn't see his face before. I believe that the nose needs to be fixed for better breathing. I don't think fixing it to make it presentable is a medical need though.

I would consider the chewing of food to be the doctors' calls.

I can respect others having empathy for him even if I don't. My problem with it is that it was self inflicted...not in a shoot out or anything (whether that would change my mind or not...dunno) If he couldn't breathe at all or something like that...then I would say fix it so he can spend his time in prison as punishment. I would do the very minimum for him.

I know a couple of people that committed suicide. That is a mental illness. He attempted suicide. So...I don't look at it as "he did it to himself".

I do think he needs to be punished for killing that woman.

it is a mental illness but without knowing why he did it...who knows. taking a life indicates a mental illness (whether legally ill or not)

maybe he tried to kill himself because he didn't want to go to prison???? ohwell

I don't recall hearing anything about suicide. He did like many do tried to kill himself so he wouldn't have to face punishment for murdering someone.

Shooting oneself in the head is an attempt at suicide.

which part of it. I do think all of it is sad myself. I do see empathy for him from others...and at the same time I don't have that much empathy for him. maybe I'm mixed?????

Yes it is but in this case it was so he could avoid being punished for murder not from a mental illness.

we're supposed to be better than the criminals. and yet, every single time we post a thread about a criminal like this...there's so much hatred coming out that it's hard to breathe.

we aren't responsible for the criminal's actions, only our own. and yet humanity shows time and again that it's just as ruthless. it's that...beast inside us that makes me think the world would be a better place without humankind.

gotcha:thumbsup:

maybe part of the reason is that it seems some people seem to care more about the criminals than the victims (whether that is really the case or not. some perceive it that way) and some criminals get better in prison than regular people. dunno. My uncle is in prison and has it better than me.

not sure there is an easy answer or even one where all will agree. Nature of the beast I guess

How do you know that?

It happened in my state and i recall reading about it. He was cleared of any mental illness to stand trial.

How do you know that?

just my guess

murder was premeditated and I believe his taking his own life was premeditated/planned

showing careful planning/thinking on his behalf

hence no mental illness

again just my guess; opinion
