My daughter was just tested for it this week (well, tested for Influenza A and B). Thankfully, the rapid test was negative at this time. She's been sick all week long. I think we have only had maybe one confirmed case in my county right now.

Is it true that the Swine Flu is actually more virulent but takes less time to get over?

Most of the things I have read said that it doesn't hang on like the normal flu strains.

In the DFW area in just a little over a month we have had 6 deaths already. It is something that we need to be aware of.

They say the virus can live from 3-8 hours upon a surface after a carrier has touched it. It is very important to use disinfectant wipes and hand cleaners and to wash your hands often.

The symptoms are very close to the regular flu the only way to know for sure if it is the swine flu is to be tested. Most cases of deaths are those with low immune systems. But not always the case it seems to hit the respiratory system the hardest.

From some of what I have heard, the people who are dying were hit by pneumonia after getting the flu, so it was the secondary infection that actually caused their death.

They have disinfectants and wipes and masks all over the hospital and clinics. We had a person die in the town 30 miles from here. They are really pushing hygiene, handwashing and covering your coughs and sneezes more than anything else to stop the spread. And to stay home if you are sick.

If you have a flu-like illness and it starts to move into your lungs, I would get to a doctor for treatment. I do believe it is hitting the immune-compromised people the hardest, otherwise is like a regular flu. I understand it can last 10 - 15 days though.

You can keep track of the cases here:

A few deaths here, most are healthy people.

I really hope people will take this serious and get BOTH the regular flu shot now and the swine flu shot as soon as they can.

I don't buy the baloney that it is always a low immune system. My husband was in excellent health and flu just took him down like a rock at 38.

I do NOT like needles but this shot is barely uncomfortable and the next day I felt nothing. But knowing I am avoiding being rip roaring sick or making the people who care about and depend on me suffer for years feels pretty great.

I'm not so sure on the vaccinations, isn't it true those who contract it also happen to be vaccinated?

In April 2009, when the reports of this new strain of Swine Influenza arose, I began performing research on it immediately. What I discovered was that this new strain of H1N1 Influenza Subtype A virus contains four RNA strands, one of which is a Human Seasonal Influenza strand which I believed is what enabled it to become more easily transmissible between human beings. Another RNA strand this new strain contains is the highly pathogenic H5N1 Avian Influenza strand which I hypothesize will greatly contribute to it's pathogenicity in the months approaching the Winter Season. The ubiquity of this novel strain amongst young adults does not befuddle nor astonish me at all. In fact, I had predicted that the prevalence of this new strain would rapidly increase within the Autumn and Winter Seasons. The pervasiveness of this novel strain is coinciding with the prediction I purported months ago, while this strain of H1N1 Influenza Subtype A virus produces relatively benign and mild symptoms of Influenza. It is important that the general population does not underestimate the unpredictable behavioral characteristics of Influenzaviruses. The initial reports of this strain of Swine Influenza in Mexico indicated that the severity of the symptoms amongst children and young adults especially were much more aggressive and that the morbidity rate of people around this age range was high. Meaning that the survival rate of the young adults it infected in Mexico was low and resulted in their deaths. It is imperative that we practice precautionary measures to avoid contracting H1N1 Influenza Subtype A virus.

This is only the beginning of what I had expected.

Sometimes people have already been exposed when they get the vacination so they get sick before they can develope immunity.
