There are so many here who simply can't afford healthcare. Even those with jobs often have to pay for their own insurance with their employer anymore. And meds, co-payments and deductibles have gotten ridiculously high even with insurance. Even if your brother could find employment here as a parapalegic, it is doubtful any insurance company would allow coverage for his pre-existing condition.
And, I hate to have to say this... There is so much resentment and animosity over so many illegals getting better and faster care than those of us who have been paying into the system forever. They can get better care than we can more often than not.

Hmmm the reason its gotten so expensive here is because everyone is running to the ER with a hangnail and stuffing their faces to the point where they're having to double the size of MRI machines and such.

England guy, you just have to take baby steps. Start with looking into what you could have provided medically by talking with various insurance companies. Hell, your brother has a legitimate reason. If the welfare moms with 10 kids can get it you should be able to as well. Research.

USA health care is a shambles. I do not know the numbers, but I can pretty much guarantee the cost of health care here is the highest in the world.

I agree.

hello keith here,i have a question for all the people on mingle, who are living in the states.i have a twin brother"paul",who broke his back 20 years ago on a fairground ride.he is now a paraplegic, paralyzed from the waist down"cut spinal cord". and we were both wondering how much it would cost him for health care in the states,if we were to move to america.so i would be very greatfull if anybody from america"or knows a fellow wheelchair user" to tell us how much it would cost.....keith

Healthcare in America is pretty expensive. I'm still paying on medical bills from three years ago, and that was from just one night in the E.R.

BTW, pregnant women and children under 19 (could be 18) are the only people that can get medicaid. After that, the only thing medicaid will pay for is birth control, which is called plan first. I am on it, about to get my tubes tied. After that I'm on my own.

Medicare is for the older generation. There is no inbetween for anyone else.

Low income people on Medicare can receive Medicaid as a secondary insurance.

In the US if you work for a good company you can get good health insurance.. You can buy it on your own but it can get very expensive depending on the coverage you need. My insurance is excellent and my company pays 90% of my health care.. I haven't read up on it but I have recently heard that Obama wants that taxed.. WONDERFUL... So now it will be more expensive for me.. That's ok, I can handle that..

Insurance is a business and they are there to make money, it's unfortunate and not fair at times but it's no different than the grocery store they just got into a different type of business.. Health insurance is no different than car insurance.. You have it for "what if's"....

We have plenty of programs in the US and some are exclusive to the state you live in as well.. Some of the rules **** and make it hard for people to get the coverage they need.. That is not fair I know.. But sometimes we have to sit back and look at the people that have caused these issues.. It's not just the greedy corporations, it's the lazy people that take advantage of systems b/c they don't want to work and people that cheat and do unethical things to get an easy pay day.. It's the doctor's that want to be rich b/c they're doctor's so they charge crazy fees and private hospitals as well..

Socialized medicine? Let's see then our taxes could go up to 40 or 50% and or we could be forced to wait to be treated for months b/c that is how that countries socialized medical works..

I see that no country has found the "perfect" way but we all have something and one rule we do have is that they cannot turn you away if you don't have insurance.. The funny thing is if you have insurance the hospital has to take the amount the insurance company is willing to pay that is reasonable and customary, but if you don't have insurance they usually charge you more than they would have the insurance company, they'll ruin your credit if you dont pay whereas what the insurance company didn't pay is a write off..

I think we need to work on what and how it's charged to citizens and not so much what the government can do to insure us.. IF the charges were reasonable and people didn't misuse or abuse it, then I think we could all afford it and for those that can't as we said there's medicaid, medicare, there are state insurances just for children, for uninsured mothers to be, etc.

Where did we get the idea that socialized medicine will cost us any more than we are paying now, or that people will have to wait "months" for treatment?
