Texting has to be the most dumbest thing i've seen!

Texting short messages to people I know is one thing. Texting to get to know each other? No thanks.

The MBTA ( the transit system here) has a policy , they have fired employees for using their cell phone on the job, two major accidents have happened by their drivers from texting, 1 trolley 1 bus, some people were killed other injured badly. There also was a guy driving a school bus swirving all over the road with a bus full of kids while texting, a young kid captured it on video with his phone. Can you imagine losing a fantastic job because you can't put your phone down!!!

Okay here goes

Guys I am not being a jerk - nor am I being macho - I am trying to be nice and help all of us with this response

What I mean is that we can say anything we want online. Because everyone is an author at heart. We have spell checks - wikipedia - dictionaries and yahoo/google. We get a chance to think before talk and we can do other things while talking to you.

Now get us on the phone?

No spell check so we have to use our vocabulary

No dictionaries/wikipedia so we have to use what we actually know

And we our talking to you and once we do not say something we get nervous or you ask what are you doing?

And we have to TELL YOU or make something up!

SOoooooooooooo

If you want to get to KNOW that man you are interested in....

Give him your phone number

If you do not like what you hear....then don't talk to him...if they continue to call over and over and over....stop answering and they will go away....trust me

People can do a reverse look up on the phone number and get an address. It's also more annoying to have to screen phone calls than block emails.

Yes people can use spell check, but what does that have to do with vocabulary? You'd use a thesaurus for vocab. (how would you know how someone spells by talking to them?). If someone doesn't really know a word, often times they use it wrong even if it's a synonym for a word they do know how to use.

And just because the person has a chance to think about what they're going to write before they write it, they still have to think about what they're writing, it's still their own thoughts. And if someone doesn't know something before hand and looks it up on wiki...well, now they know it.

You can get a general idea of a person's intellect and behavior via email. People can lie on the phone just as easily as in print.

okay so i didnt leave

why would i stay around and argue?

i let you all say what you had to and now i will reply

there is no way to get to know somebody online, NONE

because you will doubt the good ones and dislike the bad ones

i am not talking about myself - thought i made that clear -- i am talking in general

so in my opinion - it is easier if you are going to spend hours talking online why not just skip the "hard" part...which is giving out the phone number.....because guess what?

you give out the phone number often

if ya didnt we wouldnt hear all of these bad stories

why wait!? at least if you just DO IT you may SAVE YOURSELF

YOU ALL MISUNDERSTOOD THE POINT OF THE THREAD

So I have noticed some trends while being single -- and I am asking you ladies to answer this one for me:

Why do you need to get to no one someone better "via" online before you give out your number?

What am I going to do? Search your number to find out where you live? Cuz...I mean I think being online has much more resources....ya know?

Or...is it a...."he's not good enough to have my number" thing?

Is that part of a bunch of hurdles we have to cross?

Because if it is, its the hardest...everything else after getting your number is EASY :)

It's all about safety. I don't even let someone know my address until I'm comfortable with them.

I don't do online chat here. I will email only. Then I will text and IM elsewhere. It is safer that way.

That's so naive. They don't always go away!

I've had a stalker. I didn't meet him online, btw. I have a friend that had a very serious, scary stalker.

I don't give my address out right away. I went on a date with a man that I met online. He found me. He drove up and down streets until he found my car. It took him a couple of hours to find my car. He didn't even live near me.

You dont get it man....what these ladies are trying to tell you is, that its worth going through the "hard part" of getting to know someone online before giving out a phone number.

And in general, some ladies never feel comfortable giving out their phone number at all becuase of past experiences that went the wrong way.

Besides...its their phone number...they can do with it what they please. If they feel like being difficult, the so be it.

And why not just give them your number...and if they feel your not a psycho stalker...they may just call you.
