personally...I blame the state. they knew the situations and did very little. and I don't think the people are blameless either. many had been through previous hurricanes and went back. how many hurricanes before the people and state wise up? how many times do the tax payers keep paying for the same mistakes over and over?

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

people can disagree with me about this...but I won't change my stance on it.

so if someone can't afford the insurance...don't live there. there are housing for the poor elsewhere. and people know that is a flood zone. they made the choice not to live somewhere else. who should pay for everything?

I would agree with you except, I cannot walk in the shoes of those who live in New Orleans. Maybe they chanced living there because of family, maybe they chanced living there because of whatever. I cannot say that I would be responsible for mother nature just because I know it is a flood plane, or tornado zone, or earthquake zone. It's easy to say that to make ourselves feel better for the plight of others but we cannot really excuse it that way.

If you take away all the flood planes of these here United States, tornado zones, earthquake zones, mud slide zones, etc... and not let people live in any of them, the prime real estate in this country would be so minimum we would live on top of one another ten deep.

We are all at the pleasure of mother nature. Even if we do not live in a "zone". When she hits, none of us are responsible for it, no matter who complains, it was an act of nature.

 what is this stance you speak of? laugh

No one is to blame - maybe we should all be better prepared as a Natural disaster can hit anyone and at anytime. Some areas more than others but we should all be better prepared.

I live in Florida

Hurricanes season just started June 1, 2009 through November 2009. Do I have plans of leaving Florida? No. Am I paying to insure me and mine? yes. Am I well to do? No. Does that mean I should just blame everyone else as it's my choice to stay? Heck no.

ok dragoness...and as you said THEY chanced it. they weren't forced. personally I wouldn't live there out of concern for my family. I can visit friends and family..but I have to do what I need to in order to protect my family and belongings. it was their choice to live there for whatever reason, but who pays for it?

fran...I'm in tornado alley. and I have known this since I was young...but I made the choice to remain here. thankfully I have never been hit by a tornado. but I don't epect anyone to pay for me if I made the choice not to insure my belongings

I will say this one more time, when mother nature strikes any of us, it is not our fault at any level. There is no right way to say we deserved it.

I would hate to live in a country that blamed the vicitms of natural disasters for living in their homes when it happened. Wouldn't you?

I do have empathy for those that lost everything they had, lives, belongings, memories, etc.

I agree with you.

If we get hit this year we are screwed..All theses empty homes with junk setting around!!! It wont be pretty for people who still own homes!!!!!

My gf told me she is worried as well abou forclosures just sitting there wasting away with junk that can become missles. She is forced to clean up around these homes and she shouldn't have to. Where the hell is the company or bank that owns them, what's there responsibility, after all they didn't bother working with the people while they were in them.

I have a forclosure in front of me and one on the side. Neither one has had the grass mowed. Each week I add something to the garbage to get rid of debri that was left behind.

If the state could put qualified people in those homes I think that would be a smart thing to do. As for mobile homes, why the heck don't they build them better so the have some value and can be sold after their use for pete sakes. And stop zoning for them where they are in harms way by the hurricanes we know full well will knock them down again.

I have no problem with them being given away, hell they most likely sat for years in some damn yard some where ....

I don't like waste myself, in fact hate it but we don't do the smart thing ahead of time, then wonder why we end up looking like morons after the fact.

Can't you call your city and they come out and cut the grass? We can do that in my city.

Criminy! By all means, let hussein give the whole damned country to his bruthas, NOT! This is pathetic. I know too many people who were hit by those hurricanes, and not JUST Katrina. They rebuild and go on, but then they have backbones and aren't so lazy they just sit there with their hands out waiting for someone else to do all the work. Everyone knows which group is still sniveling about Katrina, and why they don't deserve any MORE help down there.

More ignorancy at it's best.

Katrina was a mess and the fact that there are still displaced families without permanent housing at this late date shows that Bush was an idiot. Obama shouldn't even have to be dealing with this.

That's true. This should have been resolved a long time ago.

I can see if it was a radom thing or a one time thing...no one can prepare entirely for that...but when it happens pretty much yearly...that is different
