I know here...the children with severe learning disabilities go to a special school were they can get the attention they need. the special ed here has kids that just struggle to learn...like ADD or something like that.

Fran,

I'm seeing my friend that is a teacher's helper in the special ed. building in the public schools here on Friday. I'll ask her if she has ever seen restraints being used.

It doesn't surprise me that that's the set up in your area. Each state and even school district does it differently due to politics and social perception.

if a child needs restraints...IMO that is not for the school system to do. the child needs special help. I have never heard that a school uses restraints before on pretty much a regular bases. IMO...that is insane

I am just so curious, thanks Winx.

Keep in mind this parent specified face-down restraints shocked and I'm thinking vs. face up restraints, sitting down restraints, hand restraints, feet restraints?????

Special help = special school here.

The kids with ADD that I know about go to regular school here. They get help with tutors.

I did a search on face down restraints. It looks like there trying to get them banned.

I found this:

http://www.cyc-net.org/threads/face-downrestraints.html

I also found another site that showed how many children died by asphyxiation from face down restraints but the darn link doesn't work when I post it. It said, "STATS: 1988 to 1997 - 27 restraint deaths; 1998 to August 2006 - 48 restraint deaths; TOTAL RESTRAINT DEATHS TRACKED BY CAICA: 75".

that was the entire news article I posted - does not go into detail as to severity of disabilities.

fran....that was my point earlier about there are kids in regular and honor classes that should be restrained for the same reasons as special ed. just because someone is inspecial ed, doesn't mean they are going to be violent any more than someone in regular or honor classes

I understood your point, I just can't get the picture out of my head, a child (regardless of mental/physical disability) being physically restrained. rant

I agree. sometimes to prevent the child from harming themselves or others...I can see to a limit. but just because someone is in special ed...doesn't mean they are violent either. and what FL is doing is going to lump those in special ed as violent

Oh I don't agree YR. This parent is out to stop the use of restraints not promote it and not sure the article only refers to those attending special education classes.

those powers suck big time laugh

State laws and regulations vary. In Florida, there is no law addressing either practice in public schools.

not sure about other states and state laws

they need laws to address these things

I disagree on one point. Kids in special ed are more violent then regular and honor class children.

I don't think that they should be restrained though.

Winx I don't think they are more violent but prone to uncontrollable acts and/or behavior. Not condoning, just explaining, as violence to me includes malice or intent. JMO.

again...there is a difference in someone with ADD vs someone with severe disabilities. and kids aren't limited to violence because of being in a special ed class. special ed in public schools here are just kids falling behind in learning..not extreme cases
