If confronted by the scenario Prisoner related I would proceed as follows:

1. Question the waitress about it in a quiet, unassuming, and non-confrontational fashion.

2. If I was not satisfied with her response I'd speak to the manager.

3. If I did, in fact, have to speak to the manager, and got the response Prisoner did, I'd go over his or her head to the Home office. Based on what Prisoner was saying the manager was just looking to get rid of an usatisfied customer without truly redressing the problem.

Unfortunately, sometimes the only way to get things done is by being the squeaky wheel. The strength of my conviction about whether or not this was an act of bias would determine whether or not I'd want the waitress to be fired.

I've been the victim of bias on more than one occasion and it is never a nice thing, but these were only ignorant people making offhand comments. However, if bias were to affect the way a member of a service related industry took care of my needs I'd be OUTRAGED!

It's all about customer service. You, as a customer, have to stand up or stay setting for your rights. I would have pointed out that the other table had a salad, you would like your now, then report it to the Manager, if no satisfaction there, report to the Main Office. But at the very least, if you wanted a salad and they were available, you should have gotten a salad. I do not think discrimination was the issue.

 i'm going to wait a couple days to hear from The Home Office,if i dont,i will call them back. i want this girl fired and i want some free food. i will never step into that specific Dennys again but i will go to other ones be seeing you

how about, instead of wanting her fired...for her to receive the proper training? often, when a complaint comes up...it's a perfect training opportunity.

many things go on behind the scenes in a restaurant. they might have been out of salad when you ordered it, but then made some. she might have thought you wouldn't want one, since you'd already been there for a bit. or...she might have been overwhelmed and not even thought of it, since she was busy with so much else at the moment.

the ladies might have called in and pre-ordered. their salads might have been the last.

bad management, in the front OR the kitchen, can make even the best of servers seem incompetent. i'm fairly certain this is a case of such...because if the management were even decent, they'd have come by your table and checked on you personally to ensure that your visit was an enjoyable one. um, they'd not have run out of salad, either...although that's the kitchen manager's responsibility, not that of the front of house.

good management can take even the clumsiest of servers, the worst of the bunch...and make them worth keeping. it's training, in the beginning and ongoing.

don't punish the server because she was set up for failure. if they'd been following up on her, it never would have happened in the first place.
