MONTREAL (AP) - While the Boston Bruins talked about how tough it is to get the fourth win in a best-of-seven playoff series, the Montreal Canadiens contemplated their bleak reality of being down to the final chance to get their first.

Boston practiced at the Bell Centre on Tuesday, one day after taking a 3-0 lead in their Eastern Conference quarterfinal with a 4-2 win in Montreal. The Bruins, who are poised to win their first playoff series in 10 years, will get their first chance to finish off the Canadiens in Game 4 on Wednesday night.

"We want to come out here and give everything we have, like we have all series, and hopefully get the win," Bruins center Marc Savard said. "That's the goal right now, is to come out and play another 'one game at a time', and hopefully we win it. It's going to be tough. We know they're going to come out and throw everything at us, and we've got to be ready."

P.J. Axelsson was in his sophomore season when the Bruins won their last playoff series, a first-round win over Carolina in 1999.He said that the Canadiens gave him and his teammates all they could handle at the outset Monday, and he was steeling himself for what they would bring in front of a sold-out crowd on Wednesday.

"I think, if anything, they're going to come even harder so we've got to be prepared for that," said Axelsson, the longest-serving member of the Bruins.Shawn Thornton, who scored Tuesday for his first point in 25 playoff games, agreed.

"Yeah, I'm sure they will so I think we can't be shocked by it, we've got to be prepared for it," Thornton said. "That being said, it's a lot easier said than done when you get out there and you can't hear yourself think when you have that puck, you can't hear your linemates, you can't hear anything and they're coming with a lot of energy, it's pretty tough to play in."

Aaron Ward has won the Stanley Cup three times, including consecutive championships with Detroit in 1997 and 1998, and a third with Carolina in 2006.The pressure of those playoff runs didn't compare to the expectations Boston felt entering the playoffs as the top seed in the East.

"This is probably one of the most stressful series that I've been involved in," Ward said. "The pressure of having gone in through a season and being a No. 1 seed, knowing that there's a lot of external factors that can really have an influence on the direction of a series, for us, we were well aware of the position we are in."

Ward recalled Peter Laviolette's advice when he played for the Hurricanes, stating that his former coach urged his players to "always understand the mental philosophy of the opponent, understand where they're coming from."

"You always have to be aware of what your opponent brings to the table," Ward said. "In Game Fours it's always the best effort's brought forth by players. You're professional athletes and you're conditioned to play well and understand that no one ever wants to lose, and you have that mentality that you'll do whatever it takes, and at all costs, to win the game."

Boston will get a boost from the return of Milan Lucic, who served a one-game league suspension and missed Game 3.The Canadiens' task for Game 4 is plain and simple - win, or pack it in.

"Just as with our fans, with our team we're going to have to prove that we can stay alive by winning a game," GM and coach Bob Gainey said. "If we win a game, then we play a game on Saturday where we can look to Tuesday. So, it's by small increments and without the first one it's hard to move to the second one or the third one, which has been our case since the beginning of the series.

"We need to win a game to get into it, whether it was the first, second, third or fourth, and right now we're sitting at the fourth, still waiting to get out of the gates as far as putting a win up on our side."

Montreal was without defenseman Mathieu Schneider and left wing Alex Tanguay on Monday night, both key players sidelined by upper-body injuries. Top defenseman Andrei Markov has been out with a lower-body injury that cost him the last four games of the regular season.

"I can't really say that they will or won't be possibilities for (Wednesday)," Gainey said. The Canadiens held an optional skate at its suburban practice facility and nine players took to the ice, including goalies Carey Price and Jaroslav Halak.

Also taking part where defenseman Mike Komisarek, forwards Andrei and Sergei Kostitsyn, Tomas Plekanec, Matt D'Agostini and Gregory Stewart, and rookie defenseman Yanick Weber, who had a goal and an assist in Monday's loss for his first playoff points.

"There's always a vein of optimism, there's always some hope, and until that's gone, that's what you play with, that's what you rely on," Gainey said.

BOSTON-S-U-R-G-E-R-Y. Just the letters by themselves are scary. But, as per his usual program when adversity is concerned, Boston Bruins forward Phil Kessel shrugged off his impending shoulder surgery with an actual (but probably painful) shrug and his usual staccato chuckle.“[Chuckle] Yeah, it’s going to be a weird offseason,” said Kessel on Monday. “Obviously, I have to have shoulder surgery, so I’ll be out for a while.”Yesterday, B's general manager Peter Chiarelli announced that Kessel underwent a successful procedure to repair a torn rotator cuff and labrum in his left shoulder.

“It’s a long one,” said Kessel prior to the proceedure. “I think it’s a little more than [Zdeno Chara’s] was last year.“But what can you do.”The surgery was performed by Dr. Peter Asnis and Dr. J.P. Warner at Mass General Hospital, and will force Kessel to miss approximately six months. In hockey terms (and even in twenty-something terms) six months is a loooong time.“I tore it back in Columbus (March 10th), when I fell into the boards,” explained Kessel during the club's final media availability of the season. “So I will be out for six months.“I knew it was bad the whole time.

“But you have to play through that kind of stuff,” he said.Play through?“You try to [put it out of your mind],” said Kessel. “Obviously it’s hard.“It’s not a little injury. It’s kind of a big one.“It’s tough, but what are you going to do?” he said.Well, if you are Kessel, you go out and finish your best NHL season to date.He established career highs in goals, assists and points this year after tallying a team-best 36 goals, 24 assists and 60 points in 70 games. The talented forward also became the club’s first 30-goal scorer since 2005-2006 and had the longest point streak in the NHL this season after tallying a point in 18 consecutive games from November 13 - December 21, 2008 (a 14-14-28 line during the streak).

“You have a [choice], you know? You can get surgery or you can play through it,” repeated Kessel on Monday. “I elected to play through it and try and help my team.
“It hurts. It’s not an easy thing – it’s painful. I can’t really do much with the [injured] side of my body. So, a lot of times, playing out there hurt.”It hurt so much that Kessel tried to wear a brace.“But I tried it and it hurt it worse,” said Kessel. “So I went [without], so it was painful, but I tried to do the best I could. The best he could was pretty good as Kessel appeared in all 11 postseason contests for the Bruins and contributed six goals and five assists.

However, don’t talk to Kessel about personally successful playoff numbers.“It’s disappointing that we finished the way we did,” said Kessel. “I thought we had a pretty good year, but we just didn’t get it done in the end.”The just-finished campaign was Kessel’s third in the NHL. Just 21, he was selected by the Bruins in the first round (fifth overall) of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. In 222 career games played, he has compiled 66-60-126 totals in “The Show.”Boston Bruins' Phil Kessel celebrates his second-period goal against the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 5 of an NHL Eastern Conference semifinal hockey series in Boston on Sunday, May 10, 2009. (AP Photo/Winslow Townson)

“I thought I played pretty well,” he said of this past season. “You can always do more. You can always improve your game. But I thought, overall, that it was a pretty good year and you can always try and build on that next year.”Asked if the prospect of surgery was scary, Kessel just shrugged again.“Obviously, it’s disappointing,” said Kessel of the original prognosis. “You know you are not going to be back until [after the season starts], but there’s nothing you can do.”However, if Boston’s budding sniper sticks with his rehabilitation program, good things are in the cards. Kessel, a restricted free agent who said his first inclination is to return to Boston next year, predicted good things.“I think we had a good team this year,” he said. “I think we did pretty well.“You know, we had a pretty good run – but we just fell a little short.”

Bruins reveal surgery for Krejci, Kessel; Recchi - NHL.com
BOSTON -- As Peter Chiarelli put it, there is still a "gnawing feeling" in the back of his head as he and the Bruins organization try to figure out what exactly went wrong, why they're not playing the Pittsburgh Penguins for the right to go to the Stanley Cup Final."There's a gnawing sensation at the back of my head that isn't normally there. And it's about this last playoff series, it's about this season and it's about unfinished business," Chiarelli said. "And we're still all collectively disappointed at the way that it ended. I think what's important to note is that throughout the course of the year, the level of expectation has risen and risen and risen. And that's a good thing. And the fact that we're disappointed here today, while it doesn't feel good, it bodes well for the future."

Veteran forward Mark Recchi, who came over to the Bruins at this season's trade deadline from Tampa Bay, was very impressed with what he saw in his short time here and believes this team has the ingredients of a Stanley Cup contender."If they're able to keep this young core together they have what it takes here," said Recchi who is an unrestricted free agent on July 1, but reiterated his desire to stay. "There is the right blend of talent and chemistry here and it was a joy watching these guys, especially the young kids learn what it takes to win it all at this level. I was very impressed by this group and if they want to get to the top, they're on the right path."

Chiarelli will have to do some maneuvering to keep this team together as he has five unrestricted free agents (including Recchi), and four restricted free agents, with 36-goal scorer Phil Kessel and David Krejci (73 points), at the top of that list. But one thing Chiarelli knows he will be getting from any of them, plus the remaining players is a new-found appreciation for what it takes to win.It was revealed over the past few days and then in detail Monday that Recchi played with broken ribs and then kidney stones for the last three games of the series. Doctors discovered Recchi had a kidney stone while examining the veteran's ribs the morning after Game 4 of the Carolina series. Recchi actually had surgery the night before game 7 to remove the stone, and was in the hospital until 11 p.m. to finish the procedure. He was still experiencing related pain on Monday.

"Obviously, I was pretty sore. I don't know if anyone has ever had one of them, but I don't wish it on my worst enemy," Recchi said. "But we all play through stuff and it's really no big deal. The guys, at this time of year, everybody plays through a lot of things. So it just felt like I could still help and still play and I went out there and tried.""We're still all collectively disappointed at the way that it (2008-09 season) ended. I think what's important to note is that throughout the course of the year, the level of expectation has risen and risen and risen. And that's a good thing. And the fact that we're disappointed here today, while it doesn't feel good, it bodes well for the future." -- Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli.Recchi's sacrifice didn't go unnoticed and this Bruins team if they're able to stay together, learned what it takes to win in the playoffs thanks to the two-time Stanley Cup Champion.

"That was ... I don't know how else to say it but amazing," said Patrice Bergeron of Recchi's courage and sacrifice. "I mean to see him on IV's and the pain he was going through before the last three games is just inspirational. You look at it and say, if this guy can battle through that, then I have nothing to complain about and he really motivated us. There were other guys battling injuries too and I credit them for that, but I think we saw that because of Rex and what he taught us since he's been here. He has just been great for us and I think we all learned a lot from him and about ourselves. We know we can be better."

The Bruins also revealed that Krejci (hip) and Kessel (torn rotator cuff; labrum) were playing hurt and will require surgery in the off-season. According to Chiarelli, both are questionable for the beginning of next season. But as Chiarelli pointed out, the fact these young players battled through that and have a better grasp on the playoffs, is a good sign for the future. He admitted the sting will remain until training camp, but it's a sting that could be worth the pain down the road."I don't know if this gnawing feeling will go away this summer; it probably won't," Chiarelli said. "It'll probably subside sometime in September. We're heading in the right direction, the expectations are high, and rightfully so."

G'morn.bro  drinker Thx! 4 dropping in & showing your support.Oh! we'll def.hoist that highly elusive & cherished Stanley Cup next yr 4 sure.We fell a lil bit short this yr for 2 reasons.1)Our newly re-built beloved Bruins consists primarily of a youthful core which is now learning adversity & developing playoff experience.2)We were struck sadly w/ several injuries to our top line key players. In closing I will say that our P-K must remain consistent "especially"in the playoff run.We have much to be proud of though & we can fully expect them to reach the S-C finals next yr.I can't freakin wait honestly.tty/soon bro.Godspeed!Cy. drinker

Confirmed:Boston Bruins to play at Fenway on Jan.1.2010 {Winter Classic Game}

Bruins fans will have a fun (if frigid) way to spend the next New Year's Day: watching their favorite hockey team play at Fenway Park.According to a source familiar with the negotiations between the league, the players, and the teams, the Bruins have been given the go-ahead to play this year's Winter Classic outdoor game at Fenway Park on Jan. 1, 2010. That same source indicated their opponent could be either the Capitals or Flyers, though no decision has been made.

Over the last three months, speculation has been that the Bruins' opponent would be the Canadiens. But it appears the Habs will not be coming to Fenway.A report in the Boston Herald this morning said that Boston was chosen to host this year's Classic -- a popular if relatively new NHL tradition -- over New York and Philadelphia.League reps had visited all three cities and, in Boston, looked at both Fenway and Gillette Stadium . However, scheduling around any Patriots postseason play was a tricky proposition, we're told, and ultimately Fenway got the nod.

Last year's Classic between the Chicago Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings at Wrigley drew more than 40,000 fans.A source familiar with negotiations between Red Sox officials and the NHL told ESPN's Scott Burnside that the details "aren't yet final, but it appears any issues have been addressed." There was some previous concern that offseason renovations to the ballpark might prevent the game from being played there, according to the ESPN report.

Fenway To Host Avery's Rangers And Thomas' Bruins On Frozen Field of Dreams by Fenway Park, "America's Most Beloved Ballpark," will host the Boston Bruins for a Winter Classic next winter, according to many sources, on New Year's Day. Fenway has the 2010 NHL Winter Classic.Last winter Wrigley Field hosted an outdoor game with the Chicago Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings drawing over forty thousand fans.

Buffalo's Ralph Wilson Stadium attracted over seventy thousand fans to see the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Sabres. Both newspapers said the Bruins’ opponent for the game has not been set. Douglas Flynn, writing in the New England Hockey Journal, says the obvious choice would be the New York Rangers. The Rangers would appear a better fit on all fronts, Flynn reports. A Bruins-Rangers game would maintain the Original Six tradition and allows NBC to promote two of its biggest TV markets while tapping into the intense Boston-New York rivalry.

Fenway is close to the heart of the Boston-New York Rivalry thanks to the countless clashes between the Sox and Yankees. Another reason Flynn noted was Sean Avery’s clash with Tim Thomas last week.A Bruins-Rangers first-round clash could further ratchet up the rivalry and spice up such a meeting, he says.Montreal, Philadelphia, and Washington would be good choices, too, he said, but New York would be the best. USA today says the Boston Bruins' opponent likely will be the Washington Capitals or Philadelphia Flyers.

Close to 49,000 braved winter weather at Chicago's Wrigley Field to take in the 2009 Winter Classic, pitting the Blackhawks against the Red Wings, according to CBC Sports, and 71,000 Sabres fans watched Sidney Crosby give Pittsburgh a shootout win over Buffalo at Ralph Wilson Stadium in 2008.The first Outdoor Classic was played in 2003 in Edmonton, with Montreal downing the Oilers 4-3 in front of close to sixty thousand fans. The Blackhawks-Red Wings game was a hit on NBCl, with a 2.9 rating and a 6 share of the television audience, according to Barry M. Bloom of MLB.com, and the Buffalo-Pittsburgh game had comparable TV ratings, making it the most watched NHL regular-season game in a decade.

Help catch these 2 wanted felons. They have both sworn an oath to work together & bring grievous harm to some innocent & endangered species. These lovable lil penguins require your assistance in apprehending these 2 life long criminals who clearly have no respect or regard for the law or these wonderful animals.Your assistance will be greatly appreciated. The Boston Bruins organization is offering a reward of a complete season ticket pass to their games & the Pens have the same offer likewise. Both teams are working together alongside the proper authorities in order to have justice served. This inhuman behavior & illegal hunting of Bears & Penguins must be stopped. They are an eyesore on the entire face of humanity.
