RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -Eric Staal scored two goals to break the club career playoff scoring record, and the Carolina Hurricanes pushed the top-seeded Boston Bruins to the brink of elimination, pulling away late for a 4-1 victory Friday night. The Hurricanes lead the Eastern Conference semifinal series 3-1. Game 5 is Sunday night in Boston.Jussi Jokinen scored the go-ahead goal at 2:52 of the third and assisted on the two goals that followed, and Sergei Samsonov added a goal for the Hurricanes.

Marc Savard scored for the Bruins, who have lost three straight since sweeping Montreal in the first round and winning the opener against Carolina.Jokinen delivered another late goal for Carolina - and this time, he left enough time to generate a couple of goals for his teammates, too.The Finn capped a third-period burst that started when Anton Babchuk unloaded a slap shot from the left point. Rod Brind'Amour took a whack at it near the left post, and Jokinen swept it past Tim Thomas and into an open net to make it 2-1.

The Hurricanes have become used to go-ahead goals from Jokinen, who won Game 3 with an overtime tap-in two nights earlier. In the series before that, he won Game 4 against New Jersey with an off-the-skate score with 0.2 seconds remaining, then scored to start Carolina's two-goals-in-80-seconds rally that beat the Devils in Game 7.He then set up Samsonov for a backhander that made it a two-goal game with 5:29 left, and had one of the assists on Staal's second goal 70 seconds later.

Jokinen weaved through several defenders and beat Thomas with a snap shot for his 40th career point in the playoffs, breaking the mark of 39 set by current associate head coach Ron Francis.Cam Ward made 17 saves in improving his career playoff record to 22-12.Thomas finished with 27 saves for the Bruins, who were out to prove they still had plenty of fight left in them after losing their previous two. David Krejci seemed to personify that, pancaking Jokinen in front of Thomas just 3 1/2 minutes in.

That collision drew a roughing minor that ultimately backfired on the Bruins. Moments after Ward stuffed P.J. Axelsson on a breakaway, Staal snapped a shot on net - Carolina's first of the night - from the right circle, and it trickled past Thomas. Not much else went Boston's way early, with the Bruins sending nearly as many shots off the post (two) as on Ward (four). Phil Kessel and Zdeno Chara each rang the right post in the opening 9 1/2 minutes. Savard scored their only goal early with a wrist shot early in the second period.

Notes: Bruins RW Michael Ryder, who assisted on Savard's goal, had a point for the first time since Game 1. He had nine points in Boston's 5-0 start to the playoffs. ... Boston dressed D Shane Hnidy for the first time in the series. He replaced D Andrew Ference (lower body injury). ... D Tim Conboy was active for the first time in the series for Carolina, which dressed seven defensemen and scratched LW Ryan Bayda (flu).

Reeling Bruins must find answers fast Saturday, 05.09.2009 - NHL.com
Managing Editor RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Boston Bruins don't know what has happened to their team, to their dream of making it to the Stanley Cup Final. But they do know that without a drastic change of fortunes, their season could end prematurely with a loss in Monday's Game 5 of this unpredictable Eastern Conference Semifinal against the upstart Carolina Hurricanes. The potential end of the season -- brought upon by a decisive 4-1 loss Friday night to the 'Canes in Game 4 at the RBC Center -- is a sobering reality that Boston had no intentions of entertaining this early in their playoff march.

After all, not only are they the Eastern Conference's regular-season champions, but they opened the playoffs with five-straight wins. Somehow, though, the Cardiac 'Canes have figured out the Bruins, using team speed to expose some chinks in Boston's armor."I think our team has probably picked the worst time of the year to play their worst hockey and that's what is happening right now," Boston coach Claude Julien said. "I think when you look at the whole team, there isn't anybody that has played up to their potential. We're not in synch.

You didn't have to look too hard in the cramped Bruins' dressing room to see long faces and furrowed brows. In one corner, goalie Tim Thomas struggled for words to describe the disenfranchisement he feels."We're trying, but there (are) different types of effort," said Thomas, who has given up seven goals in the past two games. "There is the effort that Carolina has right now where everything feels good and it's just easy for them. They feel like they are on top of the world; they are on a roll.

"Then there is us, who are trying to create something. We're putting in the effort, but it is not the same feeling."No, the feeling in the Boston room is one of despair, a feeling Carolina knew all too well after Game 1 of this series, a 4-1 victory by this same Bruin team, one that has only scored three goals since its Game 1 outburst."We have to go home and figure it out," said captain Zdeno Chara, who is minus-4 in the past two games. "Obviously, we are in a deep hole. We all realize that. You have to win four games to get to next round and it isn't over yet."

That has to be the rallying cry now for the Bruins; they have to cling to the truism that they are not dead until the Hurricanes celebrate that fourth win. If Boston can win Sunday, it forces a Game 6 back in Carolina on Tuesday. Win that and say hello to a winner-take-all Game 7 back in Boston. The Bruins followed that formula in last year's first round, falling behind three games to one against top-seeded Montreal before forcing a Game 7 that the Bruins could not win. Carolina, meanwhile, was up three games to one against Edmonton in the 2006 Stanley Cup Final, but needed a Game 7 to finally finish off the Oilers.

So it can be done. But is this clearly demoralized team -- which has no answers for the questions Carolina has raised in the past three outings -- one that can do the near-impossible?"Obviously we have to regroup," Thomas said. "We've got to be realistic and, in being realistic, there is also knowing you can do it. You can win three games in a row. How many times in a season do you do it? "We still have a chance. It's 15 minutes after the game, so I can't tell you how we are going to do it, but we are going to try."Julien also doesn't know how his team will wiggle out of this hole, but he hopes to find an answer before the puck drops Sunday night at the TD Banknorth Center. This is something that needs to be resolved before next game and we don't have much time to do that," Julien said.

Stick a fork in the Bruins. They're done.

Yeah! So sadly this is true which is greatly disheartening & disappointing for myself & 1000's of loving & supporting fans of the beloved:heart: BOSTON BRUINS  drinker As you well know by now I'm certain that the club had a tremendous year filled w/ awards,a few records broken, tremendous coaching & overall incredible progress in such a short period of time. They are now a completely re-built mostly young team w/a a few sprinkled vets tossed into the mix. They have all bought into C.Julien's team plan however they still lack maturity, experience, adversity, etc.Though I do strongly sense much more progress on the near horizon & I easily for-see them penetrating much deeper into the playoff upcoming runs in the future.Well in closing I'll say it's been a great run & a ton of fun for the team though shadowed w/ great disappointment for all their fans upon their untimely quick exit. The rivalry w/ 35TOO has been quite a blast.;)I'll always remain anti-detroit.he-he.There shall be much more words exchanged on that subject between us both.lmao!;)I hope ur enjoying the playoffs bro.Woo-Hoo! Let the Battle resume & may the true & deserving lift the Cup. drinker NHL RULES!!drinker  drinker

G'morn.bro{paw shake}drinker He-he! this is the best 4 sure.Nothing on the face of this planet compares to Stanley Cup Playoff Hockey.Woo-Hoo!.I've been following ur pesky pens:smile: I watched LaTang stick a fork into Simeon Varlamovlaugh Well done! U gotta Luv Fluery. He's always been 1 of my fav's.I hope they go all the way.I'm also hoping the dreadful wings get dumped in this round.he-he;)But if it comes down to M.A.Fluery vs.Ozzy then so be it.Detroit better give the Cup 1 last x & o before it leaves Hockeytown.rofl In regards to my beloved B's & their quest well....my above post 2 Mitch pretty much sums things up.It's funny but U always have certain memories or a focal point(defining moment)that U'll remember or that haunts U.Game#3 sudden death OT.2 min.'s in M.Lucic waltzed in a 1/2 stride ahead of a Canes "D" but could only manage a quick shot because of pressure & him lifting his stick at the last sec.Moments later they burst through the neutral zone & blasts a rising shot over Tim's catching glove. It was a game they could ill afford to lose. That seems to me as if that loss took the wind right out of their sails.Hopefully this youthful core has learned from this experience & will cont.growing so that our beloved club will penetrate deeper & closer to that highly elusive & much cherished Lord Stanley Cup.I hope ur enjoying the playoffs bro.Woo-Hoo! Let the Battle resume & may the true & deserving lift the Cup. NHL RULES!! drinker G'Luck! Pens!! Save! Fluery!!"a beauty";=)lol.

This is our beloved  Boston Bruins :heart:This effort, style, energy, leadership,& getting physical is what has brought us to this point. Now my dear, our beloved B's are back on their horse(so 2 speak}If we stay on this level of determination & want then we can easily put them away also in N.C tues.which in turn forces Game#7 at home baby.Yeah! Then we can dispose of them.I truly never envisioned us being in the hole in the first place but hey!it happens. So now the approach is 1 game at a time & stay sharp & focused. They are going to attempt to storm us tues.night in Raliegh but that's all right they'll be ready & expecting it.Let's Go! BOSTON (AP) -Tim Thomas stopped 19 shots for his first NHL playoff shutout to help the Boston Bruins keep their season going with a 4-0 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference semifinals on Sunday night.Phil Kessel scored twice and Zdeno Chara gave Boston big emotional lift when he returned in the third period after leaving the ice in the second when he was slashed by Jussi Jokinen. Chara and Marc Savard each had a pair of assists for top-seeded Boston, which had lost three straight playoff games.

Cam Ward made 36 saves for the Hurricanes, who lead the best-of-seven series 3-2. Game 6 is at Carolina on Tuesday.Thomas had a career-high five shutouts in the regular season, when he led the NHL with a 2.10 goals-against average and became a Vezina Trophy finalist. But it had been Ward who dominated the series, allowing three goals in three games as the Hurricanes responded to a Game 1 loss with three straight victories.Eric Staal, who had four goals in the previous three games, had three shots in Game 5 and was minus-3.

Chara took a stick to the left shin from Jokinen in the final minute of the second period. After laying on the ice for a few minutes, he skated off on his own but didn't return for the start of the third. When he came onto the bench shortly after the faceoff, the crowd began chanting "Cha-ra!" And when he slipped over the dasher boards with 19:12 to play, the fans stood.

An Original Six team that has not won the Stanley Cup since Bobby Orr skated around the ice with it in 1972, the Bruins entered the playoffs with the best record in the East and swept Montreal in the first round. But they have struggled against Carolina, a team they beat in all four regular-season meetings, losing three times by a combined score of 10-3 to fall to the brink of elimination.
Boston needs to win the next two to stay alive in a tournament that has already claimed the San Jose Sharks, the No. 1 overall seed.

The Bruins came out with a more physical lineup, subbing Shawn Thornton for rookie Blake Wheeler, and immediately took charge. Carolina didn't have a shot in the first 11:04, and the Hurricanes were outshot 40-19 overall.Milan Lucic helped set up the first goal with a crunching check on Dennis Seidenberg late in the first period. When Seidenberg responded, he drew a slashing penalty. Just 7 seconds into the power play, Mark Recchi redirected Chara's shot past Ward to break a scoreless tie.Kessel scored twice in the second period, both times assisted by Savard, to give Boston a 3-0 lead. Lucic made it 4-0 in the third.

Notes: Four of the five games have been decided by at least three goals. ... Boston has never won a playoff series in which it trailed 3-1. The only time the Bruins forced a seventh game was against Montreal in the first round last season. ... Boston has never lost a playoff series to the Hartford/Carolina franchise. ... The Bruins gave out yellow towels for fans to wave, but several were thrown at Hurricanes defenseman Joni Pitkanen in the penalty box in the third period.

We felt bad for Thomas, so we gave him a S.O. for his final win this post season. We just wanted to end the series at home, which we shall do Tuesday, my friend. We're already looking toward mopping up what's left over from the Caps/Pens. They're really destroying each other.

An aside: Are Boston fans as rude at home as the transplants are at games in Raleigh? I think the term "Mass-holes" was used on our local radio station to describe how they acted after the last game of the regular season.....
