BOSTON (AP) -Aaron Ward laughed when he saw all the newspaper articles asking whether the Boston Bruins would be rusty from the long layoff they earned by sweeping Montreal in the first round."When you are at this stage of the season, your athleticism should take over," the Boston defenseman said Friday night after the Bruins scored on the first shot of the series and pulled away from the Carolina Hurricanes to win 4-1 in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals. "You should never be rusty at this stage of the playoffs."

Tim Thomas stopped 26 shots, and Marc Savard scored twice for the Bruins, the top-seeded team remaining in the NHL playoffs. Michael Ryder scored for the fourth game in a row as Boston, which swept the Hurricanes during the regular season, made it five straight - by a total score of 22-7."Whether we lost 10-0 or 4-1 it makes no difference," Hurricanes captain Rod Brind'Amour said. "It's a loss, and we're going to have to regroup and do better next game."

Cam Ward made 20 saves, and Jussi Jokinen scored the lone goal for Carolina.Game 2 is Sunday in Boston."We've got to know that we can beat these guys. We've got to feel confident," Hurricanes forward Eric Staal said. "It's a best-of-seven series for a reason. We can be better; we know that. We've got to ... forget about this one and look forward to Game 2."

Thomas won his 11th consecutive game, including four straight in the first round against rival Montreal that was Boston's first playoff series victory since beating the Hurricanes in 1999. The sweep of the Canadiens left Boston with eight days off to prepare; they didn't even find out their second-round opponent until Tuesday night, when Carolina scored twice in the last 80 seconds of Game 7 against New Jersey to oust the Devils."There was some rust in the first period," Thomas said. "Not anything that was a game-changer, but we got better and better as the game went on and shook the rust off. After nine days off, one bad period is not a bad place to be."

Boston scored just 94 seconds in - on the first shot of the game - when Ryder dug the puck out from behind the net and passed it to the point for Aaron Ward. The defenseman's wrist shot was tipped in by David Krejci.Carolina tied it with 1:10 left in the first when Jokinen put a slap shot past Thomas a split-second before the goalie was flattened by Ryan Bayda. The goal counted, and Bayda went off for interference."I was too busy watching the puck go in," Thomas said. "So I didn't see that one at all."But that was the only time Thomas was off his game.

He made a save on Tuomo Ruutu midway through the first just before the Hurricanes forward was checked into the crossbar, dislodging the net. With just under 15 minutes left in the game, Thomas made a left-pad save on Eric Staal at point-blank range to keep it a two-goal game. Two minutes later, Savard took a drop pass from Phil Kessel and beat Ward to make it 4-1.The Hurricanes lost the opener of the New Jersey series by the same score.

Notes: Ryder and Kessel have at least one point in each playoff game Boston has played this year. ... It was Thomas' sixth straight game allowing two goals or fewer. ... The last time the teams played in the playoffs, in 1999, Hurricanes defenseman Steve Chiasson was killed in a drunken driving accident hours after Carolina returned home. ... Andrew Ference, who hadn't played since April 4. ... With his 31st playoff appearance, Cam Ward became the franchise leader in games played among goalies. ... Julien was named a finalist for the Jack Adams Award for NHL coach of the year. drinker

Julien Named Jack Adams Award Finalist Boston Bruins 5/1/09 EDT

BOSTON, MA - The NHL announced today that Boston Bruins head coach Claude Julien has been named one of three finalists for the Jack Adams Award, which is awarded “to the head coach who has contributed the most to his team’s success.” Julien joins San Jose’s Todd McLellan and St. Louis’ Andy Murray as this year’s Jack Adams finalists. This is the first time Julien has been a finalist for the award in his career.

Julien, who is in his second season with the Bruins, guided Boston to the Eastern Conference's top record, finishing 53-19-10 for 116 points. This includes a two-month stretch from November 1 through January 1 where the team posted a record of 24-2-1. The club’s 116 points was the third-highest total in franchise history, a 22-point increase over 2007-08 and 40 points more than 2006-07. The Bruins ranked second in the NHL in offense with 274 goals, a dramatic turnaround from their #25 ranking in 2007-08 when they tallied 212, and ranked first in the NHL in defense with 196 goals allowed. They hit the 30-win mark in their 41st game of the season (30-7-4) on Jan. 8 vs. Ottawa, the fastest they have reached 30 wins since 1929-30 (30-4-1). Julien was also the head coach of the Eastern Conference All-Star team this year.

Members of the NHL Broadcasters' Association submitted ballots for the Jack Adams Award at the conclusion of the regular season, with the top three vote-getters designated as finalists. The winner will be announced Thursday, June 18, during the 2009 NHL Awards that will be broadcast live from the Pearl Concert Theater inside the Palms Hotel Las Vegas on VERSUS in the United States and on CBC in Canada.

BOSTON, MA - Bruins center Marc Savard may have scored two goals in Boston's convincing 4-1 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes, but the B's veteran forward pointed in a different direction when asked about the Black & Gold's true catalyst in the win.Boston Bruins' Marc Savard celebrates his third period goal as Carolina Hurricanes' Joni Pitkanen of Finland skates away during the Bruins 4-1 win in Game 1 of an Eastern Conference semifinal NHL hockey game in Boston “I think [it was] the crowd,” said Savard of the impetus behind the B’s early jump. “The crowd gave us that excitement and that energy we needed to get into the game, especially when we came out, it was awesome.

“The boys followed suit.”And how.Starting with a early deflection goal by David Krejci, and interrupted only by a late first period goal by Carolina, the Bruins stifled the momentum carried up the east coast by the Hurricanes after the southern club had doused the Devils playoff hopes earlier in the week.“We rolled four lines for the first one and [with] us staying out of the box, we were able to do that [effectively],” said Savard. “Get everybody in it, take short shifts.“We’ve got a disciplined group and we proved it again tonight.”The Bruins proved many things on Friday – that their sweep of Montreal was no fluke; that their domination of the scoreboard during their four game season sweep of Carolina was a reasonable indication of what was in store for the Hurricanes. But in the end, they proved that the system put into play by the B’s Adams Award-nominated coach, Claude Julien, doesn’t necessitate division or Original Six rivalries to be successful.

“Yeah, I mean we were disciplined again, we played hard,” said Savard. “It wasn’t our best game but we got the job done, we stayed focused right until the end of the game.“Obviously Timmy [Thomas] had a great game, and Z [Zdeno Chara] did his job tonight shutting down Staal pretty well so it was a good team effort.”But it was Savard himself who put two of the B’s four nails into the Carolina coffin, thanks in large part to linemates Phil Kessel and Milan Lucic. The trio, reunited during the game by Julien, stormed the Hurricanes net again, and again and again.“Yeah it seems like [Claude Julien], when he reaches into his hat, he pulls out some good combos,” said Savard. “We’ve played 60 games together to start the year: Me, Luch, and Kess and we love playing with each other.“We were excited to get back together and the three of us I think want to be together and we got the chance to play today. We didn’t want to lose it. We stayed together, we worked hard, and we were rewarded for it.”

Boston Bruins center Marc Savard celebrates his second period goal against Carolina Hurricanes Cam Ward during Game 1 of an NHL Eastern Conference semi-final hockey game, Friday, May 1, 2009 in Boston.(AP Photo/Charles Krupa)Lucic was particularly effective, and stood tall in front of the Carolina net as the Hurricanes bore down on the big wing.“Luch came to our line in the second period when we scored our first goal,” said Savard. “I love playing with him, he creates a lot of room.“[The defense] are thinking a couple of times extra to going back to get it and it enables me to get in with the puck so I stay tight with him.

“He did a great job again and got to the front of the net and had a good tip and on the other one he just drove right through and took everybody with him and I was able to have a big hole.”“He’s a big body,” continued Savard. “On that last goal that I scored I couldn’t believe the room I had got because he went right through the middle and I just have a huge lane and it’s a credit to him.“Even on the first one, right in front, he makes a great tip on it and I remember we got the rebound. It starts before all that I’ll let him get in the corners, making guys back off and me staying tight to him. I think that’s a huge key.”Another key will be to bring the same enthusiasm and discipline to the forefront on Sunday night, and above all, execute more effectively.“We’re going to enjoy it tonight,” said Savard. “But we know we got to be better, that wasn’t our best effort…but we’ll clean up some areas and be ready Sunday.GO!!! BRUINS!!!!drinker
