 BOSTON (AP) -The Boston Bruins kept firing shots at Cam Ward. The "rock" of the Carolina Hurricanes kept stopping them.The playoff MVP in Carolina's 2006 Stanley Cup victory, Ward turned aside 36 shots for his second shutout in his last four playoff games and the Hurricanes won 3-0 Sunday night for a split of the first two games. "He's our rock," Eric Staal said. "He needs to play well every night for us to have a shot and he did."It was a description that was confirmed to coach Paul Maurice - very loudly - on a shot in the third period that Ward knocked away with his pad."I didn't expect to hear that sound," Maurice said. "It came off that pad hard, so that's a glimpse of how good he is." Joe Corvo, Matt Cullen and Staal, on an empty-net goal with 28 seconds left, scored for the Hurricanes, who will be home for Games 3 and 4 Wednesday and Friday nights.They also split their first two games of the first round at New Jersey, then lost the next game at home in overtime to the Devils."We're looking to learn our lessons because we felt this good going back to Game 3 with New Jersey," Maurice said. "(The Bruins) are going to come in, in some ways without the pressure of playing at home and being creative." There was plenty of pressure when they began the third period trailing 2-0."We played really good in the third period," Boston captain Zdeno Chara. "We were really desperate to score a goal." The Bruins got the man advantage with 6:24 gone in the second period when Joni Pitkanen was sent off for elbowing. Chara, a finalist for the Norris Trophy as the NHL's best defenseman, passed the puck from the left point toward Dennis Wideman at the right point, but Chad LaRose stepped between them and stole it.He raced down the left side, skated behind the net and fed the puck out front to Cullen, who snapped a one-timer past Thomas. The Bruins were the last unbeaten team in the playoffs after Detroit lost to Anaheim 4-3 in triple overtime Sunday. Boston goalie Tim Thomas' winning streak ended at 11 games, including the last six of the regular season."It's our first loss in the playoffs," Thomas said. "We've been practicing the not-too-high part, but now we get to practice the not-too-low part."Ward preserved his shutout with 6:37 left when Michael Ryder pounced on a loose puck in front of the net. Ward flashed his left pad out to stop the shot then made a save after Wideman got the rebound. "I felt confident," Ward said. "I felt like I was seeing (the puck) really well and I was containing the rebounds."The Hurricanes nearly made it 3-0 with less than 3 seconds left in the second period when Larose's shot from the inside edge of the left circle beat Thomas to the far side. The puck ricocheted from the post along the goal line. An official signaled that it hadn't crossed the goal line, a call that stood after a long video review.Ward's first playoff shutout of the year came in a 4-0 win in Game 6 against New Jersey. The Hurricanes took a 1-0 lead at 2:30 of the second period on Corvo's rising slap shot from 5 feet above the left circle that went by Thomas' left arm.The win was Carolina's first of the season against Boston, which went 4-0 in the regular season, then won Friday night's opener 4-1.Notes: Rob Brind'Amour played in his 150th postseason game and 63rd with Carolina, passing the franchise record set by Ron Francis, now the team's associate head coach. ... Hmmmmm!I think I smell Detroit soil,potatoes,tractor oil & a bit of defeat.;(
 Well it's the tractor/farmer guy.I have extraordinary smelling senses way beyond a human being's capabilities.So indeed!my bearific smell has not failed me again I see.Well it appears that I have a few pieces of bad news 4 ya.1)Mr. Blades has your pic.posted in/around the TD Garden,Boston's various rags,& of course all the security personnel.2)I heard they impounded your tractor 4 attempting 2 park it within city limits..3)I heard your dreadful Wings were defeated in triple sudden death OT.Woo-Hoo! (AP) - Chad LaRose tried to beat up 6-foot-9 Boston defenseman Zdeno Chara a few months ago, but that didn't quite work.So once the playoffs started, the 5-10 Carolina forward instead turned to his quickness, turning a hustling steal of a pass into the kind of goal that can swing a series.Now the breakout player of the Hurricanes' postseason run will be back on home ice Wednesday night for Game 3 of the best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinals with the Bruins, and he's looking to create more of the highlights that have made him perhaps the NHL's most surprising point-a-game performer in these playoffs. "I'm just ending up finding the back of the net here and there," LaRose said Tuesday. "I'm playing a role (and) I've kind of had the pressure to do that sort of thing. And I like that role - if I wasn't producing, then it'd be a problem. Since they're going in, it's going well, and as long as we're getting wins, that's all that matters to me."With several of his high-profile teammates struggling with their scoring touch in the postseason, the high-energy LaRose has picked up the slack, keeping his career-year numbers rolling right through these playoffs and helping the Hurricanes even the series at one game apiece. He had career-highs of 19 goals and 31 points during the regular season, then kept it up into May with a team-best six assists in the playoffs. On the team, only All-Star center Eric Staal (nine) has more points this postseason than the eight recorded by LaRose, who has been shifted between both wing positions and shuttled through Carolina's line combinations."He's one of those guys that everybody likes to play with," coach Paul Maurice said. "He's excited about playing. He's going to go work his butt off, so he's going to make you look good. He gives you chances to score. He's going to compete and say a few funny things on the bench. ... As we're moving the lines around, 'Guys, you're playing with Chad today,' (the reaction is), 'All right, I'm playing with Chad today - that's a good thing."' One of the more memorable snapshots of the Hurricanes' regular season came during the Bruins' last visit in February, when the diminutive LaRose mixed it up in the corner with the hulking Chara - a mismatch no matter how you interpret the tale of the tape."I just remember going after him a little bit, but that's all behind us," LaRose said with a smile.He found a new way to get the better of Chara in the postseason, using his hustle to help turn Game 2 - and, perhaps, the series - around for Carolina.The Bruins trailed 1-0 but were on a second-period power play when LaRose jumped Chara's pass near the blue line. He skated in and set up Matt Cullen's short-handed one-timer that made it a two-goal game. Before Carolina's 3-0 Game 2 victory, Boston had won its first five playoff games by a combined 20-7, and didn't allow more than two goals in any playoff game.
