Sad thing is; people who have never been in trouble before have been known to blow up at another simply because they pissed them off, pulled out the gun and shot them or shoved it in their faces. A gun isn't supposed to be for scare tactics and madness. It was supposed to be for hunting to eat and clothe. It was manufactured for war. Now we have people owning machine guns and the like. No hunting gun. A killing gun. Why?? I dropped my gun in the river...threw it over a bridge. I was in this relationship at the time and knew it would be too easy to shoot him. It scared me. Got rid of it. He asked me where it was and I told him...it was the gun.... or possibly him. My ex husband was an avid gun man. He had all kinds. He had them in the walls for heavens sake. The only one who ever saw the barrel of his guns was me. He used them to intimidate me. He never had been to jail well...except that time he and his family got into this gun battle. That was something. He has never had a ticket...no kinda anything with the law. He is a bad man with a gun no less. Is he an ordinary citizen or a criminal? Kat Kat, I too have seen this type of activity and in a "gun area" they dismiss the gun as a problem so you cannot get any type of protection from the law. So then you are on your own to protect yourself. It can get ugly. Ok, HOW is the GUN the problem? What if it were a knife? The guy is a creep, he is the problem, not his firearm. The law comes in when you threaten someone's life. She is not on her own. The police can still protect her. I fail to see any logic in this... |

That is the problem with a gun. A gun is more likely to kill innocents than most other weapons. In these domestic situations that influence the children mind you. The use of a gun in front of the children for intimidation or as a weapon is dangerous in many ways, the obvious way of possible injury to anyone in the vicinity including neighbors who are watching their television, to the psychological effects of seeing the fear it instills or the power it wields. Police in these gun areas are only barely concerned if the gun is not legal, they will not react properly to the use of a gun as a threat. If you believe otherwise, you have not been there, obviously. |

If you believe otherwise, you have not been there, obviously. "A bullet has no name on it. That is the problem with a gun. A gun is more likely to kill innocents than most other weapons." This is a false statement. Although i understand where you are coming from, but when being technical you have bio/nukes/bombs/mortors...etc. A gun is more of a precison instrument. I agree the possibility of a firearm hurting someone else is definitely there when used improperly. Most people don't realise what a rifle is capable of piercing. Handguns, and shotguns, on the other hand, or often use it close quarters environment because they don't pierce as much. In fact it's possible for a handgun to lose it's fatal velocity upon piercing a single wall. Ok, enough technicallity. IMO i truely believe that until we start placing the responsibility on the people who are responsible, we will always have problems. In this case, the gun is a tool. It is being misused. The man, by using it to threaten has commited a crime by his actions. Therefore, the police are legally obligated to investigate. However, many police officers don't do their jobs. So, this is where, yes, she can get a firearm if she feels threatened. But, what makes you think that she would be any safer if something different ( a blunt object, a sword, a knife, etc) were used? And, if guns were illegal at this point, how can you assume that he wouldn't have access to anything? Marijuana is illegal. I don't smoke it, nor do my friends (surprisingly) but i garentee if i wanted some tonight i could get it. It's everywhere. So logically the only thing garenteed by gun control in this senario, is the fact that she wouldn't be allowed to get one to defend herself. And if she did, she would risk imprisonment. |

So logically the only thing garenteed by gun control in this senario, is the fact that she wouldn't be allowed to get one to defend herself. And if she did, she would risk imprisonment. People shoot guns in the air on holidays and innocent unknown people have died from these bullets. Technicality or not, bullets have no name. They will not always hit where aimed. Or whom aimed at. If the woman knows how to use a gun, unlikely, she would not be putting herself at an advantage at all by purchasing a gun herself. She runs a bigger chance of having that one used on her. The gun problem is a complex one. Cart blanc is not the answer. I am responsible and capable of passing all tests for a concealed weapon but it would not make me feel safer to have one. I was raised with guns and rifles, taught to handle them and shoot. Yet, I still do not feel more personal power with one. I could disarm someone who brandished a gun at me and would feel more personal power than having an unsafe, mentally unhealthy shootout with them. I see the ideal of gun toting for personal power more of a possible mental issue that should concern people than worrying about the illegal weapons. I am not completely against guns though even though I can see that side well. I believe the mental, emotional and background checks and waiting periods need to be enhanced. I believe the types of weapons allowed needs to be restricted. I believe there should be a limit on how many a person has. |

Somebody shot a gun on New Year's Eve. I don't think it was on my block. I was outside and didn't hear a gun.
The bullet landed on my roof and I got a roof leak from it. ![]() That was a $500 deductible for the insurance to get it fixed. ![]() |

firing guns (at least in most places especially cities) up in the air is ILLEGAL for that reason alone...so therefore it is the person committing the crime not the gun

It can't. The police may get lucky once in a while and happen upon someone doing it but it is too hard to monitor. |

The gun didn't commit a crime? lol Yes, it is illegal in my city. That bullet still cost me grief and a headache and $500. |

That's some pretty bad luck there... People don't think when you shoot a gun in the air that the bullet must come down somewhere. It doesn't usually drop fast enough to kill someone, but at terminal velocity it can still cause damage... |

I think the issue here is people being responsible. That is the underlying problem. Not the firearms themselves.
I would feel quite vulnerable if guns were made illegal. Or even heavily restricted. I looked under HR 45 and discovered that every sinlge firearm i own would be illegal under those restrictions. Unless, of course i had a special federal permit which requres a two year background check and a crap load of money. I believe in being prepared personally. If someone were to break into my house i want to be able to respond. I have been well trained, and i have lots of experience breaking down doors, avoiding shootouts while eliminating threats, etc. when I served in Iraq. Maybe i am cautious because of these experiences. Who knows. But i do know something. If guns were to be regulated you would see crime increase. It's happened time and time again. The fewer gun laws there are in an area, the less crime there usually is. But one thing may have little to do with another. It's poverty we should be fighting if we want to cut down on crime. Another thing is the very basis of our constitution was made around people having the power to over through our government in case we lose control over it. If a Hitler came into power executing millions, over riding all of our rights, and we stand up and say "HELL NO"... If we were unarmed we would be screwed. If we were armed we could put up one hell of a fight. It's a protective measure and it is against the law for the government to over-restrict. If you think we are beyond these times i ask you to prove it. Prove to me that we are beyond corruption and tyranny. Prove to me that the government does whatever we tell them no matter what. Prove to me that it would be physically impossible for this to happen. This is an unlikely situation, i know this, but this is the reason we have our constitution to begin with. It's to balance the power. The three branches of government should be balanced out. And the government as a whole should be balanced with the people. "The most foolish mistake we could possibly make would be to allow the subject races to possess arms. History shows that all conquerors who have allowed their subject races to carry arms have prepared their own downfall by so doing." - Adolf Hitler Anyhow, i would rather we all have too many freedoms than too little. I am also against sacrificing liberty for safety. |

The question is if America is mature and responsible enough to carry firearms or not?
What will the future bring and how will the people be educated so they won't use them so light heartingly or for entertainment purposes, or under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or for anger situations that they can't control, or other reasons? Do you think our younger generation will decrease the amount of gun shot deaths and injuries in the future, or will it increase. These are things to tackle in the future. Also one must consider what will be a alternative to the situation if the number increases on gun deaths and injuries. Will you just sit there and accept it or will you find a better solution to help the statistics go down? What laws should be written or what should be actually done if you believe anything should be done? |
