Take a field trip through your local grocery. Look to see where all the food (fresh veggies and fruits) come from. Literally all over the world. Unfortunately canned foods do not say where they are from. With the out breaks of different diseases the oversight of the FDA needs to be strengthened. That is the purpose of this bill.

yeah, I didn't particularly have an opinion on it one way or another. just not enough knowledge of the subject.

I just wanted to find the text of the bill so we could check it out and see what they are saying

I have done the research and actually looked at what the bill said. you really should do the research for yourself and not rely on what an email tells you. I'm saying this to not panic but research it yourself and not take anything about what people say.

this one from last year:

December 17, 2008
Raid on Family's Home and Organic Food Co-Op Challenged

here is a snip
Columbus - The Buckeye Institute's 1851 Center for Constitutional Law today took legal action against the Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) and the Lorain County Health Department for violating the constitutional rights of John and Jacqueline Stowers of LaGrange, Ohio. The Stowers operate an organic food cooperative called Manna Storehouse. ODA and Lorain County Health Department agents forcefully raided their home and unlawfully seized the family's personal food supply, cell phones and personal computers. The legal center seeks to halt future similar raids. The complaint was filed in Lorain County Court of Common Pleas.

On the morning of December 1, 2008, law enforcement officers forcefully entered the Stowers' residence, without first announcing they were police or stating the purpose of the visit. With guns drawn, officers swiftly and immediately moved to the upstairs of the home, finding ten children in the middle of a home-schooling lesson. Officers then moved Jacqueline Stowers and her children to their living room where they were held for more than six hours.

Such are raids are beyond the scope of the purely administrative authority delegated to ODA and county health departments. In enforcing licensure laws, these agencies are only permitted to contract for routine enforcement services. Forceful raids and sweeping searches and seizures are not routine, and exceed the authority granted to ODA and county health departments.

The Buckeye Institute seeks an injunction against similar future raids, and a declaration that such licensure laws are unconstitutional as applied the Stowers and individuals like them.

Rose, You are so right. The internet is marvelous in how quickly it gets information out. The challenge is discerning what of that information is factually based, what is rumor, and what is self serving.

Atlantis....and they were wrong in this and legal actions taken

Red...we can only do research and look at several sides (including the actual bill) before making a decision....IMO

Agree, but I think it's not the point of what the document says, which I read through and pretty much about trying to regulate organic food suppliers to stop outbreaks , infections, dangerous viruses etc..which is all fine.

The problem is the regulation itself by the Food and Drug Administration.

I just point this out:

1 SEC. 2. FINDINGS; PURPOSES.
2 (a) FINDINGS.—Congress finds that—
3 (1) the safety of the food supply of the United
4 States is vital to the public health, to public con5
confidence in the food supply, and to the success of the
6 food sector of the Nation’s economy;
7 (2) lapses in the protection of the food supply
8 and loss of public confidence in food safety are dam9
aging to consumers and the food industry, and place
10 a burden on interstate commerce and international
11 trade;
12 (3) recent ongoing events demonstrate that the
13 food safety program at the Food and Drug Adminis
tration is not effective in controlling hazards in food
15 coming from farms and factories in the United
16 States and food and food ingredients coming from
17 foreign countries, and these events have adversely
18 affected consumer confidence;

They should be looking at the Food and Drug Administration of why it's not effective, not bring more laws.

1 (4) the safety and security of the food supply
2 require a systemwide approach to prevent food-borne
3 illness involving the integrated efforts of Federal,
4 State and local agencies;

Why should this be in the hand of the Federal Government and State agencies?

here is where I'm quoting from:

here is the text of the bill. it's too long to post in here

I can't find anything in it specific to "organic food". it seems like it's mostly concerning control of disease and is a response to all the salmonella outbreaks

but if anyone else wants to read it, here is the link

http://www.govtrack.us/congress/billtext.xpd?bill=h111-875

It's all about food safety.

some things need to be regulated....look at all the recalls of food and illnesses. some are to the extreme at times. I don't agree with the way the authorities handled the situation in the article you posted, but that isn't related to the bill. the bill hasn't been pased yet and wasn't even put on the floor until after. I don't see anything about organic food having to be farmed with toxins

Now I do think that it should be better defined as to what the administration can or can't do.
