I see it everyday working at the hospital! No matter how many times you think you can get away with something in your life eventually it will come back on you, sometimes with a tragic end. I have very little pity for most of my patients. "Those that live by the sword, die by the same", either it be by drugs, alcohol or simply very bad judgment & life choices.

Well I would say that your lack of pity will perhaps bring about it's own karmic outcomes in your life. The buddha teaches that the compassionate person works for the liberation from suffering for ALL living things. Perhaps you could think of it as an opportunity to reflect on how you would want to be treated if you were to find yourself suffering as a result of the karma that you have created. Just a thought. Have a nice day.

Compassion and pity are two distinctly different things.

In caring for them i am showing "compassion" for their pain & suffering.flowerforyou

And the job you do is an admirable one. i have the utmost respect for people who heal others. However in judging people negatively or as you put it, having very little pity, we miss an opportunity to help others. I can be as judgemental as the next person and that is a trait i am trying very hard to change about myself. My teacher said something to me once that has really changed my life. This is a loose paraphrasing... "when presented with two roads always take the road that seems to be the hard one. When faced with people or actions that cause us discomfort realize that you are receiving a blessing. Hardship is a gift that allows us to grow and gives us a chance to exercise patience and selflessness."

Actions and/or decisions that we all make in life have consequences for good or bad results. This is not a "judgement" it is a fact. These results cause others (families/spouses of patients & society) to have to make decisions & sometimes to carry burdens for that person's actions & the resulting consequences.
The "road" i have chosen to take is not a easy one at times, caring for some people who are less than lovable in their personality & character (ie. jerks!). They are the sandpaper of life that polishes my soul to make my life shine more brightly! & teaches me lessons that i might not learn by myself if not for them as teachers or examples.

That is a beautiful way to to look at it. If that is how you see it then i have to say that we are actually very much in agreement.

I have to say I love your comparison of Christianity and Buddhism. It's refreshing to see it through someone else's eyes. I grew up as a Catholic and am now a Nichiren Gakkai Buddhist. I have read the bible and the Lotus sutra. What I found was a parallel belief system with the exception that in Christianity we tend to look outward to Jesus or a saint to solve our problems where as in Buddhism we look to ourselves foe the responsibility of our actions in our life. There are parabols in the bible closely resembling the parabols of the lotus sutra, which I find fascinating.
In other forms of Buddhism you can only attain enlightment through a high priest , however in the Buddhism I practice, it is said that enlightment can be atained in this lifetime through changing your karma. In others you must go through many lifetimes to attain enlightment. In Christianity, you can be "saved" now in this lifetime and gain eternal life(spiritual)in Buddhism you strive for ultimate extinction.

Or sometime, it is through Karma that bring us together.

It's an old Chinese Saying, those who you ended up in partners or marriages is who your previous life has predetermine. In this lifetime, you learn from those you has comes in your life time; perhaps in your previous lifetime you have taken them on a sorry path, etc. So yup, karma can be a B*T*H! Some have a harder time and some have a easier time, but regardless, all your action now will be an cause and effect to you in this life time.

I do believe all actions in life have a ripple effect but I don't think there are negative and positive side effects that will boomerang back into your life

You walk your own path and life slings $H!T at you,
you can't say damn because I didn't give that bum money last week is the reason I am not getting this loan,

You live and things happen for whatever reason sometimes it is random other times you set yourself up.

Time to add some fresh blood into the Buddhist community. Is it even possible to have an intimate relationship or live with people in same house become emotionally close, have desires and avoid Karma accumulation?
