Has anyone ever noticed the similarities between Elephants and humans?

1. Unlike deer, antelope, horses, cows, etc., elephants back legs have 'knees' that bend the same way humans knees bend.

2. Unlike deer, cows, horses, cats, dogs, etc., elephants have two breasts situated in the same place human breasts are, on their chest.

I just think this is very interesting. Perhaps we share some DNA with elephants.

Balding men kind of have the same wire hair as elephants too. Hmmmmmmm.

African elephants diverged from mastodons about 7.6 million years ago, about the same time gorillas split from the line that gave rise to humans and chimpanzees.

Mammoths and Asian elephants speciated around 6.7 million years ago, roughly the same time humans and chimps split.

Along With the Ability of Fore thought, Memory and Emotion, I Believe that's about all Humans and Elephants Have In Common.

Aren't elephants one of the only animals, aside from humans, that mourn the dead?

you know what else is interesting? squirrels have eyes and mouths! maybe we evolved from squirrels 900 billion years ago! oh yeah, and giraffes know how to crap! maybe we evolved from them 750 billion years ago!?

From what line did humans and chimps split?

The most significant thing I noticed that humans and elephants had in common were their knees bending forward, and the placement of their breasts.

Yes I have noticed that many animals have eyes and mouths. But I am looking particularly at the elephant.

How many herbivores (like elephants) have knees, breasts. Most of them have hoofs, back legs - bending backward, and their milk bags between the back legs

African elephants have three nails on each hind foot, and four on each front foot. Indian elephants have four nails on each hind foot and five on each front foot.

that I'm not Sure of. I Know that Chimps Diverged From Gorillas about 7 million years ago, so that Could be the Common Factor!

No we dont. Thats just it. We share 96% similarity with chimp.

This short video is very helpful in understanding what this means exactly. The elephants are used as a comparison incidentally.

We do indeed.

I may be mistaken, but I was under the impression we share some DNA with all life. Even plant life.

Its all about tracing it back, and how far you go.

Thanks Krimsa. That makes sense that the elephants branched off from primates. That explains a lot.

No you are not mistaken but we do not share 96% and evidently more according to some later studies that indicate a fused chromosome. I’m a little confused on that and need to look at those videos however. It’s on the evolution thread. Or one of them.

Comparing the new genome with that of other animals in the elephant family also provides evidence that the elephant family diverged on roughly the same timeline that primates separated, suggesting there may have been a common cause for the splits.

"I think the divergence is the most interesting thing from this study," said lead author Michael Hofreiter, an evolutionary biologist at the Max Plank Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany.

Here is that other video but I just took it from that Evolution thread and have not looked at it yet myself.
