Don't know if this still applies, because although I've been back to that area, I've not had any reason to re-investigate this, but: Twenty years ago, I drove over to the lower part of Michigan with my then-roomate to attend a wedding. When we got there, I got a bit hungry, but didn't want to spoil my dinner at the wedding, so I went to a convenience store to buy a box of potato chips (a large box with two separate bags of potato chips contained within). Very common here in Wisconsin at the time, but you don't see them very much anymore these days. Never really paid any attention before if anybody else in surrounding states had them, because they were such a common commodity. I figured it would not only satiate my immediate hunger, but would carry me through for the rest of the weekend when I got the munchies. So, I go in and, looking but not finding, asked if they had any boxes of chips. They looked at me like I had three heads. They had never heard of anything so ridiculous as a "box of chips". And this was only one state over! Use to get 2 bags, in a larger bag here...

Piggly Wiggly's (commonly referred to as "The Pig") are everywhere around here.
I've travelled all over the country & have lived in 5 different states...I get a kick out of all the regional colloquialisms... In Minnesota, a wedgie is called a "snuggie"...  In Missouri, ya'll is "youns"... There's plenty more...but you get the gist... In Wisconsin, it's "pop". In Minnesota, it's "soda". In Wisconsin, it's a "bubbler". In Minnesota, it's a "water fountain".

In WA all hard alcohol is only sold in state liquor stores, so I thought it was really funny when I lived in AZ and could be store brand vodka.
Aparently, speaking of distances in terms of time instead of miles is something we only do in this area. Does it sound wierd to the rest of you that I say I live 30 minutes north of Seattle instead of 26 miles?

In the Northeast if you order coffee "regular" they put the cream and sugar in it. I came from the west where "regular" is just non-decaf.. You have to tell the Dunkin Donuts clerks "black, no sugar" or you will get a ruined cup of coffee.

There's White Castle restaurants on the East Coast, while there aren't any out here. There's also Pizzeria Uno in Chicago, while we have Numero Uno here in L.A. (though they're kinda dying out).

are some of the things you've noticed in other states that you don't see in your state? example:some states have 40oz beers,florida doesn't Florida serves Gator Tail in their resturants. California doesnt. |

ok im not from oregon. but i live here now.. so im going with..
in oregon your not allowed to pump your own gas.  it drives me crazy.. especialy if the attendent is buzy. other states? i went thru a state once that had 24 hour drive thru liquor store/bar.. it was awesome.. you drive thru.. order some beer, a couple bottles.. and a couple mixed drinks.. kinda like mc donalds for the alcoholics! it was AWESOME!!

Not only are we allowed to pump our own gasoline here, we also get to pay for it AFTER it's been dispensed.
On top of that, we also have completely unmanned 24-hour gas stations where you pay with a credit card. No attendants, no building. Just a couple of pumps, and usually out in the middle of nowhere for folks that need a "midway point". |

On top of that, we also have completely unmanned 24-hour gas stations where you pay with a credit card. No attendants, no building. Just a couple of pumps, and usually out in the middle of nowhere for folks that need a "midway point". if the gas station is closed.. you are screwed... you cannot pump your own gas.. unless you have a special credit card,, or if you are gettin diesel in some instances. but otherwise.. nope! i hate it!! i miss it!1 and we have to pay for the gas here too.. dork. lol |

Yeah. I had to a job on Mt. Hood in Oregon a couple of years ago, which is where I got my education about not being able to pump my own gas there.
But hey- at least they keep people working there. They're literally driving the jobs out of California. |
