Count me in, I only got a temp-job, then I'm out to look for something on my own business again...not easy, nobody wants to spend money anymore.

The temp job is something to be thankful for. I was a temp many years ago when I was in between jobs.

All joking aside, people are heading for a rough time - I am grateful I have a job that I love, and am grateful to be keeping it, but nothing is written in stone and it too can be gone in a second.

Those employed, good luck, those unemployed good luck in your search.

Remember when you look at the unemployment numbers they ignore what may be an even larger number of people out of work.

Here in Michigan unemployment numbers are based on the people drawing and applying for unemployment benefits. Those who are not working but who have exhausted their benefits are not counted.

It's my guess that the true number of people out of work here in Michigan is around 20% or higher.

I'm not sure how the state rate is computed, but the federal rate is anyone who doesn't have a job that is actively looking. the only ones that skew the curve are those called discouraged workers that do not believe they can find one and have quit looking.

you also have to keep in mind the recent crashes. the housing and construction market has fallen dramatically and there are a slew of workers and those that worked for providers that now fall into the cyclical unemployment category. it's a natural part of the business cycle.

either way, 5% is the natural rate of unemployment so as a nation, we're doing pretty damn good for a recession. it was higher after Carter and higher after GW Bush. everyone acts like everyone's getting fired when in reality, it's a normal part of the business cycle after a boom. just like after the technology boom in the late 90s. we had a good run up until the last few years - now we're on the downslope (and it's nowhere near as bad as the media is making it out to be).

read into the whole truth and you'll see just how bad the media has made it out to be. in fact, let me help: unemployment as of a month or so ago (new gets posted tomorrow): 6.5% (within 1% of the average for the last century). GDP fall this quarter? half a percentage point. just about the same as this quarter in 2000 and much less than the third in 2001.

so quit freaking out like it's the end of the world. yeah, lots have lost jobs - but it's nowhere near as bad as it has been in the past and we seemed to pull out of those ok.

*EDIT*
and also keep in mind, being on the other side of 5% is bad too. then there's more workers than jobs in many cases and that drives up wages. higher wages = lower bottom line = rising costs = inflation.

I'm relatively safe I think.

I work for a state program atm that pays me to help keep my disabled mother out of a nursing home. It's cheaper for them to pay me than it will be to pay a facilty.

I have a truck driving license and 3+ years of over the road driving experience so that if the state program does fail I have something to fall back on.

There is always someone that needs freight moved.

Thankfully I have a recession proof job. Everyone has trash and needs electricity.

Me, too! Only, I don't work with trash or electricity. I work with people in need. The saddest part is that it is my piers that I see having the most problems. grumble grumble grumble
