I am a pretty big Star wars fan.I like most people thought Jar jar was a big, dumb, stupid idiot who should have been stomped on by a At At.Despite my original feelings I can't help but laugh my ass off at him while watching Star wars movies. The scene where he walks in the dog crap, the scene where the animal farts in his face, and many others.I think he is pretty funny and he is my friend now. What are your thoughts?

I'v never really liked him. Comic relief is one thing, but Jar Jar was a bit much. IMO, of course.

UGH. Repugnant. A low point. Jar Jar falls into the category of "useless sidekick device".

I go for the "smartass" sidekick model - ie. "Donkey" in Shrek...bigsmile

laugh

I prefer my Pancho Sanchez with punch. No insipid sniveling braindead buffoons Aieeeeee. The best sidekicks complement some weakness in the hero and have hidden talents, wry humor, special insight and dark secrets.

Gollum for example (although he represents a villain and a foil in The Hobbit) is a fantastic sidekick character as he emerges in the sidekick role in Return of the King - it is his history and deceit which makes him so perfect, or Alfred (Batman), or Ramon (Happy Feet), R2D2 or Chewbacca, etc... etc. I particularly liked John Geilgud as Hobson in Arthur although there are so many fine characters....Jar Jar is not one of them....

whoa

Jar Jar was just a foul smelling, tired, cliched, offensive waste of ink. Sorry - but noway

Jar Jar diminishes the art.

An interesting thread would be favorite sidekicks and what makes them great.

If I met Jar Jar Binks, I would shovel used kitty litter into his mouth.

Then I would tape his mouth shut with duct tape to insure he cannot speak.

Then I would break both his legs so he couldn't run away or hop away or whatever. Yeah, I know I could tie him up, but breaking his legs seems more sadistic, and therefore appropriate (besides, nothing is more sadistic than being subjected to five minutes of his idiot-alien talk).

Then I would comandeer a humvee, and position it just right.

Then I would get out of the humvee and kick him a few times.

Then I would get back into the humvee, and start it very slowly. When the first tire starts to inch over his head, I would desperately hope that he would feel the pain of his noggin slowly cracking...and then splitting all at once.

Then I'd get out of the humvee to better view my handiwork. I would have a moment of silence to remember those brave heroes that were subjected to his performance in Star Wars episode 3, or whichever episode he was in (I feel if I remembered which episode, I would be doing the dead Jar Jar some form of justice, and that I cannot allow).

They were going for some comic relief but they went too far. He was too stupid and even though he was funny sometimes he really distracted from the movie. He looked too cartoonie and out of place.

I would agree it was really dumb to start the series in the middle as you have this really high techology in the begining and then leaves off with the 1970's Star wars. That was a really bad idea.

Pinky you need to see a Star wars movie.I think you would like it.

In this case, it's a stuck up, prudish, director/producer that can't work with people so resorts to CG characters can kill a good storyline.

As for Jar Jar, any character that is impossible to understand shouldn't be in a movie.

I'll say that goes for books to. Sometimes authors try to get an accent across by using creative spelling and if you can't figure out the dialoge, you end up with the exact same problem.

No one likes characters we cant understand and have to try and figure out what they said based on reactions or responces of the characters around them.

After the 3 Originals(as I like to think of them, Lucas did say that he started with those because he thought people would buy into them better. After all, if he started with 1,2, and 3, people would be pissed off when it ended with Anikan turning into Vader.

Personally, I don't think he was waiting for CG tech to be able to handle the special effects he envisioned. I think he was waiting for GC to reach the point he could create his characters so he didn't have as many real people to work with.
