Music,

Why so much interest in Christmas anyway? You seem to be somewhat pre-occupied and I think Ive seen two threads that you have directed towards Christmas? What gives?

huh

But see, that's the point I'm trying to make. Somebody can listen to a song on the radio all year long and not think twice....but it doesn't work that way for holiday tunes. What's exactly the diff?

oh i'd get sick of anything that i heard a few times a day, every single day, for any extended period of time - not just christmas music.

(( LISA )) remember our Christmas gift exchange? That was so fun!

i LOVE christmas music.

my only issue is that the radio stations start plaing them WAY too early (sometimes november) and by the time christmas actually rolls around, i'm sick of them.

It's just personal preference. Some people like it. Some don't. Some will be happy to hear the same song played all the time. Some will get sick of it.

Probably because there are so many non-believers, fanatics, etc., that have gone so far out of their way to denounce Christmas or draw others away from it over the past number of years, and I guess I just don't think it's fair. Others like to get themselves on their own self-righteous pedistals and expect the rest of the world to accept/tolerate them, but they don't think they have to budge an inch for the rest of us.

Guess I'm just standing up for something I take part in. Refusal to cow down, and all that.

What do you mean by a "non-believer"? Why so angry and resentful? Do you mean you would throw me into that bucket because Im not a Christan? noway

That isn't what I said, so please don't put words in my mouth. I am not angry, I just feel people who DO celebrate Christmas have just as much right to do so as other people who celebrate their own holidays. I don't celebrate Channukah because I'm not Jewish, but I certainly wouldn't take it away from the people who are or do. It's just a respect thing, that's all.

it's just resentment. i see a lot of it from my friends and family.

The whole point of Christmas (Christ's night) is to celebrate the birth of the baby Jesus in the manger. It doesn't matter how many "mid winter holidays" people want to have.

But so many people have the attitude of "I don't believe in it so I have to ruin it for you" I'm not saying you Krimsa but many many many other people

The mall here in Odessa (Texas) has a BIG elaborate nativity scene out front right on the roadside.

Acouple of years ago some grinches decided to sue to get it taken down. The city didnt wanna fight the million dollar lawyers so the just passed a city ordinance to bring it down

The owner of the mall said "fine, once it comes down the mall closes". And he shut down the entire mall. At Christmas time. A LOT of people freaked out over that

The nativity scene was back up with the city's approval within a couple of days

Im not putting words in your mouth. I just found that comment to be somewhat sad and the exact opposite of what the holiday is supposed to embrace. Oh well. Christmas is far and large the dominant festivity held in the US to date. Just because the vast minority might be Pagan and celebrate Yule (which Christmas was adopted) or some might be Jewish and celebrate Channukah or another might observe Kwanzaa does not mean that anyone is attacking your right to celebrate Christmas.

Hmm. huh

Have no fear, Krimsa. I did not call anyone out by name. All I did was express my own opinion, as per your request. If somebody wants to celebrate their own holidays in their own ways, that's fine, I can accept and respect that. By the same token, I'd like the same respect in return. That's all I said.

I understand. I have never been one of those types that demands that nativity scenes come down even though they are somewhat blatantly religious and in your face. I dont mind them being displayed prominently however.

The problem I think arises when they are out in front of civic organizations because the implication there is that Christianity is being favored. Why cant Jews not have a Star of David? Why cant we have a Kwanzaa fruit basket display? Then before you know it there will be so much crap out front of City Hall, no one will be able to make their way into the building.

Thats the issue.

Apparently, there must be some kind of requisite criteria needed to create a thread that will go a full 50 pages (or more). What's the trick?

Create crontroversy and be negative...

Calling anyone out by name? Because I mentioned that Christmas was an adopted Pagan holiday? That is based in historical fact sir. There is no need to take offense.

yah, I don't mind adding in the Menorrah and the Kwanzaa stuff. It just adds to it and makes the time of year even more special and magic

that is the cool part to me is the feeling of magic that permeates the whole season. Especially for the kids. And I hate seeing sooooo many people try to debunk and ruin it for the children. There isn't enough magic left in the world

I dunno....most holidays are separate from each other, regardless of religion. But even if some different religions DID have holidays that overlapped each other, I really (personally) wouldn't have any issues with overlapping themes (Star Of David as well as a Christmas tree, for example) on display, whether in front of a civic organization or otherwise.

But that's just me, and what the hell do I know?

The only things I might have a problem with are those which would be (for example) purely Satanic in nature, and so forth.
