I have a virus on my computer, don't know where it came from. It stops me from opening up different applications (games/other downloads etc.). I have firefox on here but still got infected. Whatever this virus is, it took away my sceensaver and pop ups from this company to get rid of the virus stay on the screen. I still can do somethings but this is irritating. Is there anything I can do or do I need professional help?

If you don't know how you got the virus in the first place, you'll need professional help.

My advice is:
Don't turn off or restart your computer until it's clean though.

Do you have any anti-virus? Do a scan and see what it comes up with. After that report back with findings, if you just have popup problems it should be easy...do you have a different wallpaper in the background as well? If so look up Smitfraudfix and run that.

Just because you have Fire Fox does not mean it will prevent you from getting infected. Fire Fox is just a browser not a anti-virus.

hey, if you have a virus problem just install an anti virus/ internet security software a good one. update it then scan the whole computer, if it didn't work install anti spy ware program update it then scan the whole computer, if the problem still there you have one of two choices either you contact some specialized professional or format the c drive your self. the internet browser type dose not have any thing with your computer being infected.

Sounds like Virtumonde.

I suggest Windows Live OneCare.

http://onecare.live.com/standard/en-us/default.htm

My son infected my computer with Virtumonde (the newest versions will easily bypass AVG and Avast) and OneCare took it out in one try. If you own Windows XP, you can get a 90 day free trial at the link above. I'm not sure about Vista though...

EDIT:

I like FireFox. I'm using 3.0.2 right now. But FireFox gives users a false sense of security. You need virus protection no matter what Browser you use.

Yeah... reformat your hard drive. That'll take care of it. O.o (not)

The suggestion about Windows Live One Care is the best one. If your HD is infected that badly then downloading an antivirus program might go horribly wrong.

The scan might take a few hours, depending on the speed of your internet connection. After it's done and problems are all fixed, THEN download/install a good antivirus program once you know your computer is clean. AVG and Clamwin (I use Clamwin, it's free and great) have forums that you can join and information on their websites so that you can keep the programs updated and talk to other users if you are having problems.

And then: Stop downloading so much porn. Porn = bad for your computer. yours in Chaos, Scarlett

It should return after the scan is finished (can run as long as 10 minutes). The program has always performed solid for me.

Some of the suggestions that were given may work, or due to already having a virus it may do nothing. I would suggest a free antivirus try avast.com good software very accurate and you can't beat the price. I would say that if after an a/v install if you still have it I would either look into a product called pest patrol(not sure of the cost but not free) it tends to get rid of the infection when most other software has failed. The last option is to use a product called hijack this (free) but be warned you need to understand a pc very well as this directly edits the registry table and can make your mostly working pc turn into a non booting one if you edit something incorrectly. I hope that helps and all of these are tried and true I use them on a daily basis being a systems admin.

I have seen a lot of tips on removing viruses on this thread under computers. First thing first. Run a avg or some type of virus protection. If it does not find anything then you need to take some other steps. Depending on the virus if you restore to an earlier date that may not work as some virus infect your backup files. The best way to remove a virus in your computer is to boot to safe mode. You do this by restarting your computer then hitting F-8 or F-10 or one of the F keys depending on your computer to get it to give you the option to boot into safe mode. Once in safe mode you can either by using a disk or thumb drive run your anti virus program. I use avg which will not catch everything. I also have spybot and malware bytes. In combination they do a good job of catching everything when running in safe mode. Or if you do not have these when in safe mode go to bit defender. com and run the online scanner and let it do its job. If you have virtual mode there is a specific program that removes it. Spybot does on some of them as there are several types of virtual mode virus. If I can be of anymore help just let me know and email me here. I wont put my computer business url for fear of getting in trouble.

get linux!!!!!!!!
if im not mistaken, most virus creators use linux, and hate windows. these people create malicious files for the sole purpose of bringing down users of windows. linux for the most part is immune to most viruses.
i am a data networking specialist. i.e im the guy that protects computers. one of my laptops is a pure linux box. the other laptop is windows vista. i have more problems on viruses with my vista laptop than i do with my linux laptop.
linux rules. but you need to know how to use linux. plus its free.

not everyone can use linux or will take the time for the learing curve it takes to use linux. I agree its the most secure alternative. Also many cant use linux because of their employment.
& no you dont have to take it to a repair shop if you got some common sense of how windows works. Google every error, or known malicious file

so for for the meantime get spyware doctor will clean better that anything out there at the moment but it is retail
