People don't "pop out" kids to stay on welfare. They do not receive enough money for the kids to get out of poverty. The monies they receive are not enough to even feed a child!

Well maybe the person i know is just undereducated and doesn't realize that. I've seen a single mom raise 3 kids on welfare and she refused to work.

Look, my point is this... If someone actually DID their homework on the situation, no, it wouldn't be full proof, but at least we would have less trouble with it. This includes the trouble with LACK of help as well. Welfare is a safety net, not a lifestyle. Maybe we need to find a way to get businesses back over here, instead of sending them overseas? That should help the situation. Making able, bodied people work for their welfare check would be another positive thing IMO. That would save the state money on cetain projects....maybe? Another thing i would love to see is every citizen recieve a voucher that cover's the costs of room and board for at least the home state university level... this should also help. Secure the value of our dollar by backing it with raw materials again should help keep out our "inflation tax", which should also help with the cost of living...

Welfare reform..We have been hearing it for to many years to count..Cutting benefits is not reform..With the economy the way it is more people need help..Not because they are lazy and don't want to work, there are just no jobs..

Agreed. Actually what i am preaching is no, don't cut benefits, instead make it more possible to get ahead. Like, the minute someone makes an extra 50 cents an hour, don't just cut the health insurance, or make them take a pay cut( at least not one so severe that it puts them behind where they were). There needs to be some way to allow someone to get ahead without making them fall behind...

This was my point guys, when i brought up the people i know that avoided working extra hours for fear of losing health insurance... Sorry if i wasnt clear.

Housing, Education, Food, Healthcare...when did these things become priviledges of the few??...

these are RIGHTS that belong to everyone...I wonder how much more mean-spirited Americans can get towards one another...its really scary sometimes to read these posts...

The only RIGHTS we have are liberties, and the persuit of happiness... The rest is up to us...

And constructively, how was i being "mean"? If people really need help we should help them... How is that philosophy heartless or cruel?

In a higher phase of communist society... only then can the narrow horizon of bourgeois right be fully left behind and society inscribe on its banners: from each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

Yeah... We all know from watching the great nations that have adopted this philosphy that not a single one of them have a rich ruling class, a poor class, or corruption, greed or avarice.

We should all join a commune.

He He He...

Or perhaps just by that darn bridge in alaksa.

We SHOULD have it, not MUST. Anyhow, the biggest problem with the system is that it doesn't allow people to get ahead. There needs to be some way to regulate out many of the people that abuse the system.

For instance, I know several people that avoid working too many hours because they jst got a raise. That would put them into a slightly bigger income bracket than they would lose insurance, or take a pay cut, and that would actually put them behind.

And the people who just refuse to work because they cand live for free, or the ones that pop out kids so they can both stay on welfare, and make more money on the system. Then there are the immigrants who come to this country and immediate go on welfare. And why is it they get free education, yet little Jonny whose parents bust their asses to pay taxes has to fork over an arm and a leg to pay for an education?

Maybe the welfare system shouldn't be a free paycheck, maybe it should be an actual job? Make the people clean up garbage on the side of the street, plant some trees, work on the highway, or SOMETHING...?

Not sure what they should do, but someone in charge needs to do their homework...
 What makes you think that if you drop people from social assistance programs that "poof" suddenly a bunch of jobs will appear? And your stereotyping about people having babies to stay on welfare. And how are you gonna explain to little Johny why his some of his classmates are STARVING TO DEATH??? Do you think having children and elderly and disabled people starving to death in the streets will make this a better society?

Thank you for giving me another chance...drinker drinker drinker Yeah, there are so many problems with these programs i can't help but think something needs to be changed. How come it's so hard to get off these programs once you start? And yes, there are people that abuse the system. I think these two problems could be given attention. More of course, being payed to WHY it's so hard to get ahead while under that program... I also think a lot could be done with the college programs i mentioned before. And businesses leaving and outsourcing also plays a big role. Bring jobs back here, pay for basic college, don't "punish" people every time they get a raise, i wonder how much that would help the program?

 I dont think anything should be done to social programs. Who cares if its being abused?(whatever that means) Its there to feed the impoverished. And it does. The only thing that should be changed is that it should be increased. All of society reaps the benefits. We dont (usually)have people starving to death out in the streets, for one. And I think college should be made MORE accesible to people. I hope thats what you are saying. Some people will say I sound socialist but I call it being Christian. I know that it sounds good to talk about "getting tough" on social assistance but in reality when it is cut the only people that are hurt are children, the elderly, and the disabled. The so called "lazy people" and "drug dealers" will still be "lazy people" and "drug dealers". Politicians are just using this issue as a way to drum up votes and the folks who believe them do not realize the people they would be hurting.

Under the current system in my state, one is forced to go to job training to receive aid. There is also a time limit on how long you may obtain aid.

Not just the poor, i think everyone should get free college at least up to the state university level. Book's and fee's included. Education is one thing that should never be cut short when teaching people responsible for running their own country...
