What are some reliable media players available for download?

I'm referring to ones that actually do what they say they do, as in the very simple function of playing dvds. Not ones that say they do this and conspicuously don't.

I'm getting more and more irritated at my vlc, which earlier this year suddenly stopped playing dvd movies. Window Media Player isn't worth a damn. What does work??

If you find out, please let me know. I can play dvd's. But I can't find a single thing out there that will play my anime dvd's. They all want me to spend more money to play dvd's I've already bought once. ARG!

Edit: Just noticed you were having problems with VLC, 0.9.2 has just been released, download it and have a go.

---

Download this VLC: http://www.videolan.org/

It is stable as a... ummmmm stable, plays almost everything you throw at it and is customisable.

Its not the prettiest media player, but who wants to be shallow.

What annoys me is that there simply is no logical reason why my media player shouldn't be playing.

Generally, it's as simple as clicking "file<open disc," but now I get an obnoxious error message.

What I accidentally found out was that clicking the "play with vlc" option on the menu that immediately pops up once the disc loads actually works.

Sounds obvious, but my habit was to always close that window, and due to this bull**** I had no reason to believe that would work...

All of this sounds simple, except with dvds that have their own play software built in still will not play (an example: I Am Legend:angry: ). They just automatically open up Windows Media Player, which everyone knows does not work.rant

Ok, rant over.laugh

Ummm turn autorun off... Good idea WRT security anyway.

Chances are though, though, you are too late. Sony has installed a nasty piece of software on your computer to prevent you watching DVDs normally.

Welcome to being treated like a criminal even though you purchased the DVD legally. If you had pirated your DVD this problem wouldn't have happened.

There have also been viruses released that use Sony's DRM to hide on your computer.

Please, please, please tell Sony what you think about this!

I support this commercial 100%

VLC is very good, even handling subtitles as additional files, My media player wont touch that.

Also, if you were fortunate enough to be running Linux, you couldn't watch it at all without breaking laws set out in the DMCA.

How are media companies able to create legislation in your country? Smells fishy to me!

Chris.

Winamp works pretty well. However, a lot of people have problems with Windows not being able to read a DVD or CD drive that has been installed correctly. (I know, I'm one of them. I paid big bucks for this computer that had a RW DVD drive and now--for some strange reason! none of the drives work, including my 3.5" disk drive. I'm going to have to take the comp in to have it fixed and pay even more money.)

If you are having read/write errors and "drive not found" with WMP, then it's possible that you will also have them with another application.

After a lot of research, I'm taking my computer to a tech because it seems like this is a very common problem and very hard to solve.

I know this is kinda discouraging, but good luck! yours in Chaos, Scarlett
