Or then again, maybe they should be locked in a cage with some angry dogs.

SPRINGDALE : 10 kittens killed after facility break-in
BY ADAM WALLWORTH

Posted on Friday, September 12, 2008

SPRINGDALE — Police from two cities are investigating a break-in at Springdale Animal Services that left 10 kittens dead and 10 missing.

Nothing was stolen in the break-in at 321 Randall Wobbe Road, which was discovered at 6: 20 a.m. Thursday, said Lindsey Droste, director of animal services.

Someone climbed through a window in the shelter’s cat room and released all of the cats from their cages. Four kittens were killed at the shelter, apparently by being thrown against the ground, Droste said.

Six kittens taken from Springdale were found dead, killed in the same manner, in the parking lot at 675 E. Joyce Blvd. in Fayetteville, a shopping center anchored by Home Depot.

The six dead kittens were discovered about 1: 30 a.m. by Fayetteville animal control officers responding to a call from a parking lot sweeper. A transcript of the 911 call showed the caller noting the kittens were wearing collars marked “Sept. 11.” Droste said that the shelter puts paper collars on cats with the date they will be available for adoption. Cats and kittens are held three business days before they are eligible for adoption, she said.

Some of the other cats and kittens had been placed with dogs, but those were not injured.

It’s possible some of the missing kittens escaped or hadn’t been found in the facility, Droste said. The window is about 5 feet from the floor.

All of the missing or killed kittens are 8 weeks old or younger, said Teresa Johnson, assistant manager of the Spring- dale shelter.

Five of the kittens killed were only 4 weeks old and were taken from their mother, Johnson said, adding that the mother cat was crying for them all day Thursday.

“We’ve been asking why all day,” she said. “Why ?” Droste lamented the loss of the kittens but was relieved that the financially limited shelter wasn’t damaged.

“It’s horrible they killed kittens but they didn’t smash cages, spray-paint the walls and break every window they could find,” Droste said.

Springdale police had little information other than the investigation will continue, said Lt. Kenneth Church, afternoon shift supervisor. There was no damage to the shelter’s window, but a screen was removed where the break-in occurred.

Fayetteville investigators haven’t determined if the incident is related to a break-in at the Fayetteville Animal Shelter on Aug. 9 where someone freed cats and dogs from their cages, leaving them to roam around the facility.

“They didn’t harm any of the animals at our shelter, so we aren’t sure if the two incidents are related,” said Jill Hatfield, superintendent of the Fayetteville Animal Shelter.

Animal cruelty in Arkansas is a misdemeanor punishable by a maximum sentence of one year in jail. Arkansas is one of five states without a felony animal cruelty law.

“We want these folks caught,” Hatfield said.

That is very sad. The do need jail time for something like that. If they'll do it to cats, what will they do to humans....

Serial killers usually start out by maiming and killing animals. Besides punishment, the person/people that did this need serious treatment.

And why post this? Because the mistreatment of animals is something that often gets overlooked or brushed aside. There is currently a movement to make the punishments for animal abuse much more severe, and this is the type of incident that shows the need for that.

I agree that it needed to be posted. Its easy to go through life thinking everything is peachy with fog colored glasses on. But a real look at humanity tells you the true picture, and most people don't want to see it painted that way.

I thought the same thing as you, Sunny!

Serial killers start by hurting small animals.

Being a cat lover..this made me physically ill. I'm glad you posted it, though, as more laws need to be passed to protect our helpless animals!

Whoever did this, is one sick individual and should be caught and get therapy..before he/she/they move on the small children!

Ruined your lunch?? How do you think the animal control officer felt, when walking in..seeing all these dead kittens..some as young as 4 weeks old?? THAT is sickening...and I'm sure that will stay with that person for a long time.

This is horrid..and I'm sure this type of thing happens all the time in the States and doesn't even make the news.

Sickening...that some people have no value of life whatsoever!

I agree, that they should be put away..to protect other animals and BEFORE they progress to small children or become serial killers.

Shaking my head here at the level of apathy! Shame, shame that so few even took the time to post to this topic!!

Animals are helpless..and KITTEN IN CAGES?? How I wish they had a guard dog in there! Bet they will now! Too late to undo this atrocity, but if animal shelters are being broken into..I saw put a few guard dogs in there..and let the sicko's face an angry dog! Big time toughies..to kill kittens. Bleh..

And thanks for your anger and outrage, Sunny! Love ya, my fellow animal lover!!

i didnt read all that...but torture and abuse of animals is early sign of sociopathic behavior...
and ya, psychiatric intervention could be a good thing.

A number of years ago, there was a similar even in some town down south. Made national news. One of the kids was leaving for the military. That was stopped.

I remember them interviewing people in the town. Some people said "Kids will be kids." Some said, "They are just animals, it isn't like they have souls."

What I think is that I wouldn't want to marry a man that did that. I wouldn't want to have kids with a man that did that.

If a man can do that to innocent animals, he can do it to an innocent baby.

You can tell a lot about what kind of father a person will be by how a man treats animals, children, and the elderly.

Stop making excuses for people who do that kind of evil thing and start taking a look at what turned those people into that kind monster.

There's a damned good reason for posting this.

If you know about it, if you suspect it, act.

If you don't care about animals remember that it might be your children or your neighbors or even you next.

What's the best way to stop this sort of thing? Know your family, your children and your neighbors. Communicate and teach through example. Create an extended network of family and neighborhood.

So sad. Seems like they would have better security around a facility like that. It is really scarey. I am not sure that treatment is even possible with people that crazy. Some people just need to be locked up and kept away from anything they can make miserable. If they are wicked enough to do something like that they are wicked enough to say they are cured to get out of treatment and too often back on the street.

The State of Arkansas (where this occurred) is only ONE OF FOUR STATES in which this type of crime is not a felony. It is still only a misdemeanor!

Good to see there are still numerous folks who have a heart and can also see beyond the single incident.

As for the rest of you, I pray you are not enlightened by a first-hand experience, and I pray you don't have pets.

this made me sad.If i lived in that neighborhood or town,I would shudder to think what kind of monster could harm innocent suckling kittens or put them in with dogs.I hope they find this sick f@#$k before he kills a child.

That's ridiculous...I just don't understand why someone would want to do that to ANY living creature, human or not.

It's sick.
