I disagree! If I think a guy is cute I'll tell him, but I'm usually talking about something adorable that he did. Or if he was being goofy, laughing at himself. That's very cute, and a secure man with a sense of humor is hot as hell!

I think you can usually tell whether they're sincere or not. Depends on the context.

But usually... if a woman tells you you're cute, she's interested in you and likes what she's seen of you. If she tells you you're hot, well... she thinks you're hot and has probably entertained the thought of planting one one you (at least)

i think it would depend on the intention of the person who says it,and the meaning behind it.
if a man says it while salivating and grabbing his groin,then chances are that he's insincere.
if a woman says it while she's watching some guy who's just climbed out from some lamborghini,then chances are that she's insincere.
but on the whole,i never knew any guy who hasnt felt turned on when a woman tells him that he's hot,
women like it as well deep down inside..

I generally just take people's words at face value early on in communication. I don’t automatically read things in to statements that may or may not exist. I also do not assume that all men have agendas. I normally wait around a bit. Sooner or later their true colors come through.
