There is evidence of more racism in the Northern States than in the South today, and they never flew the flag of the CSA!!

My friend actually has the confederate flag for his bedding lol. Comforter, sheets, pillow cases. It was always funny to see people reactions on road trips. He would prop it up in the window whenever we would stop somewhere. To us its more of a history thing, but I also think my friend like to see how people reacted. Call it a social experiment maybe.

The Civil War was about slavery and only slavery. Anyone that says differently is lying. It was a states rights issue in that the slave states wanted to keep owning slaves even though the federal government was outlawing it. No it was about States rights, State sovereignty. The North was becoming more and more reliant on big Gov for support. It was getting out of hand and taxes were beginning to be imposed on all. The South, who were more self reliant and Agriculture based didn't think they should have to pay for services they didn't need. Only about 15% of all Southerners owned slaves! The war was over States rights which Abe and the Republicans were fast encroaching on. The issue of slavery was a weapon used by the North in a hope of turning Slaves against their owners. A war behind the lines so to say! Check the dates of the emancipation laws and how they coincide with the beginning of the war. Check the secession declarations submitted by the Confederates when they seceded. Several States did not even secede until Federal troops advanced across their borders with intent to attack other Americans! |

I think racism is more prevalent in the North, because we have learned from our mistakes and owned up to our mistreatment of African Americans.
While the Northern States think they never mistreated African Americans. By claiming the war was over slavery they feel they have done enough, their mistreatment's of African Americans were expunged, and thus dont need to look inward! |

The Southern States didn't use those services and didn't think it was right. I'm talking about Port/dock improvements, social services, and environmental services. Rail improvements, road improvements and a millennium of other Big Gov items that the Southern States provided for themselves but the North couldn't because they were reliant on Industry, exports, and immigration! Then as their populations increased they wanted more representatives in Congress who were more sympathetic to their needs than the needs of the southern States. As the country was expanding westward they wanted the added states to be governed like them, but still wanted the Southern manpower to fight for the expansion. Against the Mexicans and the Indians, and they wanted the South to help pay for it all! |

Racism is prevalent everywhere, that's the sad thing. And instead of addressing the issue, we rally behind emotional covers, such as whether or not people should have/own/display/be proud of a flag. |

But slavery was simply an emotional "battle cry" if you will. It was an issue people could understand, it was emotional, it appealed to the masses, it was something people could get in order to justify a war that most people could not understand. But the issues underlying the civil war were incredibly complex and most people didn't know or didn't care about those reasons. I mean, really, could you rally people behind where they were putting railroad lines? As long is it wasn't in their own backyards, it made no difference in day to day life. The confederate flag is a symbol of a culture who was willing to put everything on the line to defend their right to choose how they lived. Really, it is no different than "Old Glory." |

My brother lives in Fredericksburg, VA. When I go up there I am always amazed at how much more racism there is than here. There is a lot of Racism in VA!! When I go to Biloxi, Miss to see my other brother you hardly see it at all. I'm not saying its not there but the further North you go the worse it gets. When I go to Atlantic City to see my niece it seems they are racist against everyone, Even Southerners! |

Mirror, not to be rude here, but you are way oversimplifying. As a matter of fact, most Southerners did not own slaves, nor did they think it was right. Probably 10% of the population of the south were slaveowners, including other African-Americans. And if that had been the only issue, most southerners would have told their elected officials to go "f***" themselves, they weren't going to bankrupt themselves and get themselves killed for something they didn't believe in or have any part of. And, as a further matter of fact, there were several northern and border states that had slaves up until the end of the war. They were not fighting to keep their slaves either. Slavery, as an institution, was on it's way out at the start of the war, for both economic and moral issues. If that had been the ONLY issue, the war would never have happened as most people knew it was a way of life that was soon to be over, regardless. |

Howabout being proud that the rest of this country stood up and put their lives on the line for the human rights they believed in. State sovereignty is a guaranteed right in the Constitution and a State was not required to join the Republic in 1776. Look how long it took for all 13 to join the United States mirror! The new political Party (Republican) that Abe belonged to wanted to prevent a couple of States from exercising their right to leave the Union. When they asked the Union to get their troops off their land the Feds refused. So the State militia attacked at Ft Sumter. When the Fed's sent troops to try to take the Ft back several States seceded all in quick order, and formed the CSA in order to provide a United front against the Federal Gov infringing upon their rights of State sovereignty as guaranteed by the Constitution! |

[ Oh, you're accurate, but like most people who want to spread hatred, ignorance and bigotry, you're only giving out partial information. And you focus on an emotionally-explosive topic in order to mask what you either know nothing about or want to ignore because it doesn't support your view. |
