Topic: For those who smoke? | |
---|---|
I smoke. I'm addicted to it and it sucks. I've quit 4 times in the last 20 years and in times of extreme sadness/emotional stress I always pick it back up. I wish it weren't true but there it is. There is currently a coalition to make Florida a tobacco free state. This bothers me because I am presumably free to make my own choices here in the U.S. I don't think this is a good idea because if you allow something like this to happen, where does it stop? I've lived in a condo where the homeowners association, usually policed by geriatrics with nothing left in their lives but the joy of telling others what not to do, passed an ordinance allowing no motorcycles, no pickup trucks and no boats on the property. At the time I owned all three. When you make sweeping generalizations about taking away the rights of others, think about rights you have that you may not want to lose. I'm not defending smoking by inconsiderate assholes but I do think in America we are supposed to have the right to make our own choices, good or bad. Think about it. My issue is FAT. I am a fat girl... someone on here griped about walking off a big mac (can't stand fast food) and making fat people loose weight. So be it! You just mentioned you tried to quite on several occasions but BAD experiences cause you to pick it up again... If my state said I couldn't be fat AND IT WERE IN MY BEST INTEREST, I would go for it. Having Florida bann smokers may be the support you need. is it in your best interest or is it a ploy to turn everyone into mannequins and robots - just a thought to ponder. I would do it for my best interest. I have NO desire to be a skinny mini |

I know exactly what you mean about the smoking, I have tried to quit 5 times since October. Once I forgot that I had one of those stupid patches on a lit a cigarette, damn near killed myself. How can we call this a free country if we are not free to make decisions for our own lives on our own? |

So grneyedldy, can you answer my question? Kayak, I am deeply sorry for your loss, I am not a nurse nor in the medical field but I can tell you that smoking is not the only cause of lung cancer. Like everything in the body, it's about checks and balances, when things start to go off balance the body reacts, sometimes negatively. causing malignant tumors, growth called cancers. good luck to you Thank you Again, a better answer than that quack (the doctor) gave us. |

I smoke and believe if I didn't I'd need a padded room somewhere. I comply fully with the new rules and regs for smoking without grumbling.
I do believe tho smokers are an easy target for getting folks elected and lining the pockets of our officials. I don't believe for one minute big brother gives a rats behind about my health. It is a smoke screen, pun intended, to appeal to the masses, that our elected officials are doing something about the health care crisis in this nation and all nonsmokers jumped on board with it and it has snowballed to the point that it is utterly ridiculous. If they cared about our health at all they would tackle the issue of insurance costs so high that most folks cannot afford it, including myself. Regulate the drug companies for their outlandish costs of medications that many elderly folks cannot afford on a fixed income. Most not-for-profit hospitals are a thing of the past. Medicine has become a big business. Those are the real health issues that need to be addressed, not a few smokers standing on a street corner, that nonsmokers now can easily avoid. Sooner or later they'll figure they've regulated and taxed us about as far as we're willing to accept and target another population of our society they can exploit for their means. So eat up on those Big Macs and fries, or that Pepsi you're drinkin, you could be the next. |

I have NO desire to be a skinny mini I think you're an amazingly beautiful woman NOT fat What about if your state said you couldnt be fat, it will still be up to them to dictate what fat is. is what I am saying. If you want to live a healthier life thats great, but to have someone tell you, you must weight x amt of lbs to live here is a lot for me to accept. Just sharing my $0.02 |

V, you illustrate my point beautifully- you've decided what my best interest is. I'm not quite ready to be relieved of that responsibility just yet.

You call it "responsibility"!
You no longer have "control" of your issue! Stop making sound like a choice if YOU HAVE NO control! |

Do you feel it unfair the way that the smoker is treated in society nowadays? I do not smoke and if you do , please keep your distance from me : I do not need your stink around me . |

Mind you, there is still no solid proof that smoking causes cancer. It is the pre-dispositioned mind that creates the danger and the hypochondriac person in side of people. If you want to be sick, you WILL be sick! There is much power in the mind and more people need to think of that rather than whining about the elements that we have already been pre-disposed to. Period! Sorry but I have to totally disagree with you here.. we get at least 1-2 patients a month that we find lung cancer in.. and guess what? THEY SMOKE or did in the past!! And one patient was married to a smoker so therefore was exposed to second hand smoke... so believe what you want and I pray the power of your mind keeps you healthy! My Dad died of lung cancer and colon cancer. He NEVER, I REPETE NEVER smoked ANYTHING in his 59 years of life and took good care of himself. With all do respect, Would you care to explain this to me? |

Dae,
Your comment didn't bother me. It is what it is. I don't try to make excuses for it AND I don't try to make others accept it. Thank you for the compliment. |

It IS my choice- at least for now. However, as long as there are people arrogant enough to assume they know what everyone else should do, my choices are in danger of becoming extinct.

I get exactly what you mean. Everyone has a choice. If we start enforcing should and should nots, where does that end? |

It's interesting to see all the opinions on here. Everyone is there own person and you have your right to your choices. It's just knowing who it's going to effect around you and how you deal with it. It don't matter what the situation is, it's what your actions that you take that matters to the people around you. I will not say smoking is a good thing, but it is somthing in my life right now that i deal with. It's a choice i made and it's a choice if i want to change it.

...So I guess parenting should be thrown out the door...?
Just pop those bad boys out and let them figure it out because it's their life and they are their own person. |
