Mind you, there is still no solid proof that smoking causes cancer. It is the pre-dispositioned mind that creates the danger and the hypochondriac person in side of people.
If you want to be sick, you WILL be sick!
There is much power in the mind and more people need to think of that rather than whining about the elements that we have already been pre-disposed to. Period!

Sorry but I have to totally disagree with you here.. we get at least 1-2 patients a month that we find lung cancer in.. and guess what? THEY SMOKE or did in the past!! And one patient was married to a smoker so therefore was exposed to second hand smoke... so believe what you want and I pray the power of your mind keeps you healthy!

My Dad died of lung cancer and colon cancer. He NEVER, I REPETE NEVER smoked ANYTHING in his 59 years of life and took good care of himself.

With all do respect,

Would you care to explain this to me?

Ok...
She said 85% not "the ONLY way"...

Was second hand smoke never a factor?

Dae, some things you just can't explain. But I agree I do think although most lung cancers are caused by smoking, that there HAS to be another factor involved.

Dana Reeves comes to mind.

Exactly.. and when you have metastatic disease it starts out in one area then spreads so it's possible it started in his colon and mestaticized to his lungs. Some things just cannot and will not ever be explained!

Right but small cell or non small cell lung cancer is a primary tumor originating in the lung. In our case, he had metastatic lung cancer non small cell stage 4, which metastisized to the brain and liver secondarily. Gawd I need my RN degree too!

I smoke. I'm addicted to it and it sucks. I've quit 4 times in the last 20 years and in times of extreme sadness/emotional stress I always pick it back up. I wish it weren't true but there it is.
There is currently a coalition to make Florida a tobacco free state. This bothers me because I am presumably free to make my own choices here in the U.S. I don't think this is a good idea because if you allow something like this to happen, where does it stop? I've lived in a condo where the homeowners association, usually policed by geriatrics with nothing left in their lives but the joy of telling others what not to do, passed an ordinance allowing no motorcycles, no pickup trucks and no boats on the property. At the time I owned all three.
When you make sweeping generalizations about taking away the rights of others, think about rights you have that you may not want to lose. I'm not defending smoking by inconsiderate assholes but I do think in America we are supposed to have the right to make our own choices, good or bad. Think about it.

Yes you have the right to smoke in your own home if you choose to. And those other laws where you live are a little extreme.. I think I'd move! LOL

Kayak, I am deeply sorry for your loss, I am not a nurse nor in the medical field but I can tell you that smoking is not the only cause of lung cancer. Like everything in the body, it's about checks and balances, when things start to go off balance the body reacts, sometimes negatively. causing malignant tumors, growth called cancers. good luck to you

Oh I don't think she meant it like that! flowerforyou I agree, you live some where you have the right to do whatever in your home as long as it's legal. All that boat, rv stuff is sort of silly to me.

My issue is FAT.
I am a fat girl... someone on here griped about walking off a big mac (can't stand fast food) and making fat people loose weight. So be it!

You just mentioned you tried to quite on several occasions but BAD experiences caused you to pick it up again...
If my state said I couldn't be fat AND IT WERE IN MY BEST INTEREST, I would go for it.

Having Florida bann smokers may be the support you need.

dripping with sarcasm but I love it. I am a smoker and a very conscientious one.

But are you people aware that you are allowing to be dictated/ruled. Once every personal choice and right is removed and we are no longer allowed free will???

i quit smoking about 9weeks ago...

and at that place that was formerly known as work..... smokers aucutualy got treated better than non smokers....

example.. i was a manager.. (salaried) when i smoked.. i ALWAYS got my break... occasionaly my boss would invite me to join her to discus work in the smoke lounge as well... so it was like getting additional breaks...

as soon as i quit smokeing everything changed...
i no longer got theextra breaks.... much less the regular ones... the non smoking lounge was always less entertining than the smokeing one.. and if i was on break at the same time as asmokeing manager... and they called for a manager... it was always me that had to take the call because i wouldnt be waisting a cig. and they would...

it goes both ways.... sometimes people are just treated badly...

as i lost my job 3 days ago... and have 4 kids to raise... and have managed to remain smoke free still...

*fingers crossed*

Cancer, no matter where it is or what form, is a very ugly disease. In MOST cases if caught early can be treated but not always cured as it can return later as we all know. But seriously, putting a cigarette in your mouth and breathing chemicals into your lungs cannot possibly be good for anyone whether they dodge that bullet of getting lung cancer or not. It's still like playing Russian roulette!!
