Yes Jane.

The immigrants who came here legally in the early 1900s didn't have any
handouts. They struggled just as much if not more as they did in their
own country. But they saw a dream that they didn't in their own country
of origin. They saw potential. And as far as discrimination, these
people suffered though a lot of discrimination. Ask your Irish grand
parents about the signs that said " No Irish need apply " Gee that
sounds like discrimination to me. Yes, their are those immigrants who do
jobs that Americans don't want but there are those immigrants that come
here and sell drugs and run underground prostitution and other kinds of
illegal activities. Plus our system is getting overwhelmed with legal
immigration as well. So I would be in favor of those who seek legal
immigration, then take it by a case by case basis.

I have NO problem with LEGAL immigration.
There should be a fair playing field for everyone.
Why should one group of immigrants get preferential treatment
cos the crossed the southern border (like not having to
learn English) when any other group of immigrants (Irish,
Italian, Vietnamese, Korean, Persian, Arab, etch.) have to
learn English and don't get the advantages of the current
wave of mostly illegal immigrants.

Also too as you can probably see on products in the stores of both
English, Spanish and other languages. This drives up the cost of these
products. We have programs for learning our language. Some are fee. Some
you can get a grant for a college. The older folks I can see will have a
hard time with this ESL but at lest they should attempt it. The
immigrants from the 1900s didn't have this kind of programs to
assimilation so they made due as best as they can.

sorry honey but you are wrong about this, I saw with my own eyes when I
took my grandfather for his test to become a citizen of the united
states wish he didn't pass because a black woman decide it he didn't
know enough english, wish is another story he finally become a ciizen
before he die.

Any way I saw a alot of chinese coming with a big smile in their faces
all with their lawyers happy because they pass the stupid test how no
idea because it was obvious they didn't speak a single world in English,
my point is this people have alot of help from their own people all of
them. so don't feel sorry for them they are in better shape and in good
hands.

I wish I could say the same thing about latinos, instead of united
together and help eachother like others from others country do, we
attack eachother. It sucks.

Have anybody have say anything about the armenian taking over glendale,
they think that city belongs to them.

What about china town and korean town.......and every where you look is
a chinese business .........are they not taking over the united states
too?.........no ha because they are making money and not asking the
governmnet for help.

you miss understood my point . i don't have a problem with them if they
pay taxes. i never said that they don't want to or avoid it. if they
want to make them all legal, i could care less. i never said that they
don't work hard either. my point is that if they have kids in school and
take part in our government funded programs then they should have to put
in. i never once said anything about illegals being lazy or criminals
because i agree that they would only add to this country if they were
made legal. no offense to you because you're new but people really need
to get their points straight before you comment on what someone else
said.

How is it KB, that they can take part in our government funded programs
and not be "legal" citizens...I'm confused

Please explain...

It's very odd that a single woman, left to raise children alone, who is
an American citizen, can work her fingers to the bone, be considered
"poverty level" income...not be eligable for one single, solitary
government program...and she has to chose between food on the table or
medicine? Something is wrong with our system.

there is someting wrong with the system but it is attributed to too many
people i think. they don't qualify because technically they aren't
supposed to use them but there are tons of ways around it. they may not
be able to stay on them forever but i think some people would be
surprised at how much actually gets through. there are illegal
immigrants children in rolled in schools all over the country and
schools are funded through tax dollars. now before i get someone jumping
all over me because they don't understand where i'm coming from, they
have a right to an education but it's just an example of the drain on
the system. there are a ton of health care programs and such that are
run by government funds that they participate in also because they don't
want to turn away someone in need. i can completely appreciate their
situation but i am only speaking from the point of economics and the
burden on the tax system.

that last part of your statement jane is exactly where i'm coming from.
there are people(single mothers) who work 2 minimum wage jobs and live
in public housing who cannot pay there bills because even public housing
has gone up, they can't survive like that but are denied for some things
because they make too much money. why don't we take care of them first?
there just enough to go around anyway to spen it frivously.

I believe what's wrong with the system is that everything is too
complex. You have programs on top of programs and the system gets
carried away. Such as welfare. The system doesn't allow you to get back
on your own feet because it just propitiate it's self by not allowing
you to get ahead. You can't have a full time job and still get
assistance. That full time job now usually doesn't pay for all of what
you need, or bearly pays for it. So there is no incentive to find work.
That's why they stay on it for generations. I'm not blaming people on
welfare for using it. I just think there should be a way to allow people
on welfare to get ahead so their can be independent. The problem with
that is those who are working in a job that they never need welfare will
complain about those on welfare while working full time too. So the
endless cycle prevails.

Also too People commplain about the high taxes that they have to pay to
pay for these programs that the illegal imagrents are on.

Tue 09/26/06 08:26 PM
i agree with that recon, i guess it comes down to you either go work and
pay for child care and be broke or get on welfare and be broke. i think
they are trying to develop programs for aid recipients now where it is
designed to get them back on their feet instead of just giving them
enough to survive. i know there are some who are looking for the easy
money but most would rather work and have a better life than to
constantly struggle on welfare. social security now has a program to
reintroduce recipients into the workforce without losing their benefits.

Tue 09/26/06 08:29 PM
i don't have a problem with immigrants and i don't mind putting my tax
dollars into those programs but they are supposed to be for american
citizens. i wouldn't care if they made all the illegals citizens because
the system wouldn't be in so much flux all the time, it would be much
more stable with the added dollars.

True, but that's why the middle class always vote the Republicans in
because their sick of paying taxes for the Welfare receptions. On the
other hand if they don't want Democrats to be soft on global issues such
as terrorism. so you have a damn if you do and a damn if you don't.
There is no really easy answer.

I think it's great that they are can allow Welfare recipients a chance
to get ahead and finally get off of the Welfare system but as I said,
the rest of the country don't see it as a viable alternative cause they
are going to pay for it. That's why the rich and famous find loop holes
so they don't have to pay much for the Welfare.

Tue 09/26/06 08:57 PM
i think that's why alot of people get confused about where my points
come from because i don't identify with a specific party but i tend to
agree with democrats on social and economic views but i am not a liberal
person, openminded yes but can't really be considered a liberal. i don't
like republican views on those issues because they seem to forget where
they come from and i don't want to see that gap between rich and poor
get any wider. everyone in this country deserves an even shake, that is
what our country is based on and i don't think someone should step on
those values. that's why i can't stand it when we are in india within72
hours for the tsunami but a year after the hurricane our gulf region is
still in shambles and the people that lived there are still displaced,
it just don't make sense.

I was in the middle if a debate like this the other day. Some guy was
going off about all those damn illegal immigrants and how they try and
take over the country by taking all the jobs from Americans. For some
reason when I asked just how many Americans really, really wanted those
low paying menial labor jobs that illegal immigrants tend to wind up
taking, he didn't have much of an answer.

Then some guy piped up with how those menial jobs wouldn't be so low
paying if it wasn't for the illegals. But when I countered that that
would mean that the blame really shouldn't be placed upon the illegals
that take the low paying grunt work, but rather our fellow American
citizens who would rather make these low paying jobs available then pay
other Americans a fair wage, he didn't have much to say back.

We want to stop illegal immigration, we should spend less money building
stupid fences and passing useless laws, and use that money to make some
kind of desirable incentives along with effective penalties to persuade
US businesses that its in their best interests to hire Americans at fair
wages, and not try and cut corners and costs hiring illegals. That way
illegals, seeing that the only way they can work is to become legal,
won't be able to find the under the table pay employment, get legit jobs
and pay legit taxes and strengthen our country's economy. -=x
