The kitty and rooster
Would tease and play.
Thrusting and parrying

When the sun set,
Under a glimmering moon -

Yes, when the sun set
In the moon’s bright light,
Did they make love?
Or did they fight?

For the kitty and rooster
Raised a God awful din
And later, so much later
Found to their chagrin.

The walls of their home
Were not thick, but too thin.
The ruckus they made
Heard clearly without, NOT contained within.

Well the feathers flew
And so did the fur.
The kitty would hiss,
Spit, snarl, and then purr.

The rooster’s crowing;
Well, loud is just not the word.
The neighbors all gathered
Concerned by what they heard.

Then they heard a badger snarl
And the hiss of a snake.
They swore a monkey screamed!
“Call the cops, for goodness sake!”

The kitty and the rooster,
Now quiet and content.
Heard a loud knocking
At the home, where they rent.

The officer politely asked
If all was well?
The kitty said, mildly alarmed,
“We’re fine. What’s wrong, please, do tell?”

“Mam“, he said,
“Do you have permits?”
“For what“, she asked.
“Wild animals in city limits.”

Poor kitty, she blushed
From her head to her feet.
The rooster laughed hard
And fell from his seat.

The officer realized
From her blush and his crow,
Not to mention the fact,
He was Dine’ (Navajo).

Their sacred joining
Bred totemic release.
There was no need for the neighbors
To call the Police!
