some people fear commitment

see that's what I don't understand, why fear something that could be the best thing in your life?noway

because once you give everything over to someone else you have risked everything. And when you have had your soul handed back to you over and over again, you start to realize that this "one true love" crap is a bunch of bullspit.

Because people view marriage like buying a house. Sad but true.

I think people put more time, consideration, and research into buying a house.

Why are you marrying that abusive drunk?

Cuz I love him!

It is a shame that we do not give the importance needed to a committment we make wether to a spouse, a friend, or a relative. I don't understand why people play games, specially adult people.

Because it became more important to burn your bra, have a career, and put the kids in child care. Believe it or not, back in the day, it was the woman that kept marriages together. Once the economy became more important, than family, everything was geared to get the woman out the house, and into the work force. Then all the Feminist convinced woman they didnt need men. Now everything is so mixed up, no one knows what to do or expect. should i stay home, should i go to work, do i take his name, should i hold the door for her, is it ok if i say i love you first, how many times a week is it ok to have sex, who should make the most money.....etc. Its all screwed up.

some people just dont know how!

It's not that they don't know "how" it's that they chose not too!

I totally agree. even in this site, we see headlines such as "looking for the One" "are you the one" when the truth is they are just a bunch of people unable to committ to anything.

my aren't we judgemental.

Perhaps I should have stayed with my husband and let him continue to knock me around. I probably would not be here now, but I would have remained committed.

I don't think that what committment is about.....flowerforyou

It isn't just in relationships... there is lack of commitment in many areas of our everyday living... lack of being a parent... lack of in paying our bills.... lack in work ethics... we as a society in large have forsaken the real meaning of commitment in all fashions not just relationships.... it is there is where we feel it the most...

laugh I just agree, the woman did hold the family together
and enforced family values. There also was a time when it didn't take two to make ends meet in a household.

I think it is good that all forms of slavery were abolished.
I am much abashed to see that there are men who feel that women should still be subservient to them.

I think women should do what they want and men should do what they want.

Why do people think that is wrong?

Why don't we go back before slavery was banned and women were given the vote? You know - the good old days?

Would that work for you Brian?

drinker drinker I'm gonna change my mind about women love and relationships and cheat on everyone! Commitment is a fantasy!! Freedom!!

Obviously, I'm being sarcastic. I know people have been burned. Hell, I saw my ex bone my best friend up close and personal. Others have had it worse. But commitment is more than just deciding to stay together. It starts with your ability to reason before you commit.

I think there are three C's in a healthy relationship, and they're part of an equation. C*C=C squared.

Commitment being the least of the three. The other three are communication and comfort. If you can't communicate (OPENLY) with your signficant other without being humilated or slapped, then you have no comfort. If you aren't comfortable in a relationship, then you certainly can't openly communicate. If you're missing one of the two first C's, then why commit???]

Of course, there are other things, respect, love, ability to have a friendship, compatiblity... Too often people meet, and either out of the endorphin rush, or the old "I aint gettin any younger" syndrome, they rush into things. People DO stay together ya know. And it's not an accident. Granted, there's a lot that goes into it, but you're not going to convince a rational person that after 10000 years of developed human existence (or whatever calendar you use) that all of a sudden we can't stay together? Horses**t. We've just forgotten how to as a species.

if something isn't for you then it's not for you. but that doesn't necessarily make it wrong for others.

well, since I am forced to hold down a household on my own, I am glad that I am able to be educated and have a career and not have to depend on a man. I have never been able to depend on any man.

Commitment? Doesn't anyone believe there is that "one" person out there that they can spend the rest of there lives with? I don't know, I'm going through a divorce myself because he couldn't commit, and with all the topics tonight I thought this should be brought up.ohwell

This is why i joke around kinda about how most women i'm interested in can't handle me. I'm in for keeps onec i spend that time getting to know someone and hoping there doing the same thing. I said this one time on here and it holds true for me. I have not one time have fallen inlove with any woman i been with and thats because i wasn't allowed to give my wholeself to them. I have yet found one that i want to be with that is worth my whole being. That alone most don't even know what it means to give your whole self. Hell that would actually mean they would have to open up and actually let someone get to know who they really are. kinda scarry being happy isn't ithuh

Ooohhh. I hope no one hopes that marriage is a form of slavery? Man, if that's the case, then I'm totally out of turn even on this topic... Marriage is supposed to be an equal partnership... Or so I was told...?
