Old wives remedy: A drop of mineral oil on a small piece of cotton, place it in his ear.

For both of you something warm to drink and hold him. Soothe him with your calm presence.

I realize it is not recommended to stick anything in the ear. You're not stuffing or packing. If you have no mineral oil, lightly place the cotton in his ear.

Warm 'em up. "Heat is excellent for earaches," says Jennifer Derebery, M.D., assistant clinical professor of otolaryngology at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. "Heat promotes blood flow and marshals infection-fighting white blood cells in the area." She recommends using a hot-water bottle, a hot towel or a heating pad, warmed to a comfortably hot level and wrapped in a towel. Keep the heat on your ear for 20 minutes or until the pain goes away, whichever comes first.

I love google

well i would suggest Call Your Doctor first):

Pain Medicine

Give acetaminophen (e.g. Tylenol) or ibuprofen for pain relief or for fever > 102°F (39°C).(Do NOT give aspirin to children)

Local Cold

Apply a cold pack or a cold wet wash cloth to the outer ear for 20 minutes to reduce pain while the pain medicine takes effect. (Note: Some children prefer local heat for 20 minutes).
Avoid Earplugs

If pus or cloudy fluid is draining from the ear canal, the eardrum has ruptured from an ear infection. Wipe the pus away as it appears. Avoid plugging with cotton. (Reason: retained pus causes irritation or infection of the ear canal).
Eardrops

Prescription eardrops or olive oil drops for pain aren't safe if your child has ear tubes or a hole in the eardrum. Therefore don't use eardrops unless your doctor recommends them.
Contagiousness

For children old enough to safely chew gum, chewing may help relieve the pain and pressure of an ear infection.

If a child is uncomfortable lying down, resting in an upright position may help reduce pressure in the middle ear.
Ear infections are not contagious.

Call Your Doctor If he develops severe pain

P.S-Avoid smoking near children. Smoking has been shown to cause millions of ear infections each year in children.

Hang in there sweetie. A couple of things-don't lay him down flat. This puts pressure on the eardrum. Prop him up with pillows. Also, alternate between tylenol and ibuprofen every 2-3 hours. It's perfectly safe. I hope you get some sleep soon. Good luck.
