Topic: A homeless person asks you for some change-

I see them coming a mile away, and before they can ask me for anything, I ask them

"Hey man, lemme bum a smoke and a dollar from you"

In all seriousness, most of them will attempt to give me money. That being said, I laugh, and usually give 'em some change from my pocket.

Oh, and everyone who thinks the homeless are all a bunch of crazy nuts, some aren't. It's a proven statistic that over 65% of Americans are one paycheck or emergency from being homeless.

In Ontario, Ca, not far from where I live, a literal 'tent city' popped up near the airport because of the housing and sub prime credit mess. I bet a lot of those people used to look down their noses at the homeless...

Bottom line is, be careful how you judge a class or group of people.

I see homeless people every day, and know some by name. Some of them are genuine, others are just druggies. Half of them have more money than I do.

I'm just going to get the t-shirt that says, "Yes, I have plenty of change, you homeless piece of sh*t. Thanks for asking."

This generalisation that homeless people are responsible for their situation is starting to urk me...

Many different cicumstances contribute to homelessness...

Mental illness, marriage breakup, domestic violence...

Have a great paying job, and a glamorous mortgage to go with the glamorous house, and lose your job, and not find another... watch everything get repossessed... watch your wife and kids walk away... find yourself living in your car with an armload of clothes...

Finally make the decision to get out of an abusive relationship.... and find all the refuges/shelters are overfull... have no money in your pocket, because you ran for your life...

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out, sometimes circumstances are beyond someone's control...

I've been homeless, and not a drug f*cked addict, nor alcoholic..

Yes, I agree. There are those that are homeless due to such circumstances, especially due to domestic violence. I do not think the actual homeless are what are being referred to here, though.

In what way Lilith? There's a clean pretty version of homeless, and a dirty yukky one?

I begged... busking is begging, and I perhaps didn't smell so great, at the time...

How many eyes racked this young kid, up as a drug addict?

How many minds thought, get a job, clean up your act... you chose this...?

How many people just like posters here decided my downcast eyes, and stuttering voice was because I was strung out needing drugs, when in fact I was ashamed, desperate, and scared...

I recall a man doing an experiment one time who found that pretending he was homeless was ore lucrative than his job. Let me see if I can find it. (Yes I know that it would involve sitting outside in the cold, but it's the principle)

Edit: Can't find it, but here is a well stated article which shows that the jury is still out: http://www.straightdope.com/mailbag/mbegprofit.html

Way to misconstrue there....drinker

I think that there are people who are homeless due to circumstances they could not control. Those are the people not being referred to here.

There are people homeless due to circumstances they could control. It's not difficult to grasp what is being said here.

And I'm sorry for your prior situation. I've been without a home myself. And known others who had it much worse than I. Much worse.

Many are alcoholics or addicts. No, it's not a choice

To be alcoholic or addict is a choice.

Once they have become addicted, their choices are not clear.
The wiring of their brains has changed. Their brains are telling them that they need the drugs and/or alchohol to survive just like our brains tell us we need food to survive.

You are making it sound as though they are incompetent. They are not.

No, they are not incompetent. But..crack changes the wiring of the brain. During recovery it may take 6 mths. to a year for the wiring to correct itself again.

I always give 5 or 10 if they ask politely. Ive come close a few times so I know how hard it is, and a few dollars doesnt even buy one meal now days.

Only time I say no is when they ask me while Im driving or in my car, my first reaction is to always grab my gun, and I dont want to take my hand off the wheel and my gun to give to them, or Ill be caught between if theyre not just asking, but taking, so I just say no and leave.

Simply put? They chose the drugs and the consequences that come with them. When they chose the drug, there was nothing wrong with their "wiring", as you say. Voluntary intoxication is not a defense for anything. Legally or morally.

It's called self-medicating to numb their mental issues.
They didn't think they would become addicted.

How many people have drank alcohol on this site? We can't predict which ones will cross the line into addiction without them even knowing it's happening.

I had a homeless guy follow me around for three hours and threaten to kill me unless I gave him money. I didn't have any money on me, and he tried to make me go to the ATM and take money out. Needless to say, I stayed extremely close to law enforcement.

If you choose to call it that, okay. They knew it was a possibility, and still chose it.

The individuals to whom this happened.. and overcame it? Those are the people I admire and respect. And there is one very special one whom I adore completely. Perhaps he will post here later. I'm off for now. Goodnight to you. flowerforyou

Taylor, I'm just over the hill from you & there was a huge one up in Azusa canyon, I've rode my horse up through there & talked to alot of them before it was cleared out a year or so ago & alot of those people have jobs.
They can't get into a place with out a address.
