I have had people come up to me on job sites asking for money so they could get something to eat. Most of the time they wreak of alcohol, I tell them no, if you are hungry, i will get you something to eat, but i'm not buying you booze. You would be surprised at how many walk away???? If someone truly needs my help, and if i can, i will help them, but i'm not taking them to raise.

I usually get them a sandwich or something instead of giving them money. I don't need to be swindled by some drug addicted homeless person planning on wasting my money to f*ck themselves up more. If they need something I get them what they need, not money which can be used for anything.

Not to sound overly harsh, but most people are homeless because they choose to be.

It's not always that simple, but if they chose drugs and/or alcohol over all else, then that is what they choose.

Quite a few of the homeless have a mental illness such as schizophrenia. In the Reagan years the monies for the mental institutions were slashed. Many were turned out onto the streets.

Many are alcoholics or addicts. No, it's not a choice.

Some are families that have had financial problems. Many families in the US are a paycheck away from being homeless.

Then there are the ones that make money out of panhandling.

Wink- I work with the mentally ill. Yes, it is a choice. At least where I live. The resources and funds here for homeless are outstanding. I used to work as a caseworker for those severely mentally ill who used to be in institutions. I know it is a choice. My post was not made out of ignorance.

I have worked with the mentally ill also. I have also worked in a dual diagnosis unit (mentally ill with addiction). I take a friend to NA mtgs., I have attended Nar-Anon meetings. Yes, they have choices. Sometimes they can't see them.

Once they have become addicted, their choices are not clear.
The wiring of their brains has changed. Their brains are telling them that they need the drugs and/or alchohol to survive just like our brains tell us we need food to survive.

It's an excuse. If they are able to shoot up or lift that bottle to their face, they're able to get themselves to clinic for rehab.

Give them my change. It could be a vet that protected our country..

Ugh, I hate seeing homeless people. Especially around here. I feel so awful.. I understand that they got where they are today because of their own lack of judgment, their addictions, and their mistakes. I can't help it though. I always think to myself about what would happen if I was put in such a situation.

In Toronto, it's a lot easier to ignore them because they're just all downtown and all they want is to get drugs.

I saw one guy in Toronto.. his sign said "Why lie?.. Money for Marijuana." I laughed and gave him some loose change I had, but in Toronto, it's a lot easier to just ignore it.

But when I see them in my hometown, I always give them something..
There is one guy that is used to always hang around the Tim Hortons and I would always buy him a coffee and a muffin.

Sometimes I wish I could ignore it and just walk by, but I can't
do it.

The guy around Tim Hortons, I was talking to him one time during the summer, and we were talking about how he got to where he was, and what he was trying to do to help him self.. It all just broke my heart to hear. But, I did find out that he's doing better for himself.. got a job and such, so there is always hope.. Always.

We will disagree then. Yes, I'm sure that if they had a choice they would pick losing loved ones, their self-respect, their jobs, their homes and commit a slow suicide - said with sarcasm.

Over and over again, they see they lose housing over drugs. I'll admit people make mistakes, but they do see they have choices. They choose drugs. They choose alcohol. They do see they have choices. They chose drugs. These people are not mindless or stupid. Or ill informed. The community in which I work has tremendous resources.

It's not as if they are unaware of their surroundings, or not had the choices explained over and over and over as to what will happen. Even those on payeeship do it.

And I'm well aware of SAMI and what it means, but thanks for explaining.

That's good. I like giving McDonald's coupons so they can get food. I won't give money. Well, I might give money if I'm in the mood.

Lol on cold days sometimes I'll take them into a store if I have shopping or something to do, that way they can be warm (since the stores won't let them in unless someone accompanies them)

This generalisation that homeless people are responsible for their situation is starting to urk me...

Many different circumstances contribute to homelessness...

Mental illness, marriage breakup, domestic violence...

Have a great paying job, and a glamorous mortgage to go with the glamorous house, and lose your job, and not find another... watch everything get repossessed... watch your wife and kids walk away... find yourself living in your car with an armload of clothes...

Finally make the decision to get out of an abusive relationship.... and find all the refuges/shelters are overfull... have no money in your pocket, because you ran for your life...

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out, sometimes circumstances are beyond someone's control...

I've been homeless, and not a drug f*cked addict, nor alcoholic..

Haha talking like Mr. T isn't persuasive.

It is a disease...but there are also options that a person can utilize to treat it.

Lastly...from comedian Mitch Hedberg: Alcoholism is the only disease you can get yelled at for having. "Damn you, Roger, you have alcoholism!"...you never hear "Damn you, Roger, you have lupus!"

"We've all seen the man at the liquor store beggin' for your change
The hair on his face is dirty, dread-locked, and full of mange
He asks a man for what he could spare, with shame in his eyes
"Get a job you f**king slob," is all he replies
God forbid you ever had to walk a mile in his shoes
'Cause then you really might know what it's like to sing the blues "

Yah?

Hmmmmm let's see. People know what could happen if they pick up the bottle or go buy that black tar heroin. It's not like they don't hear how bad alcohol and drugs are. I'm sorry, but I don't feel sorry for anyone that takes it upon themselves to drink too much or shoot drugs into their veins. It is a choice!!

Yes, I agree. There are those that are homeless due to such circumstances, especially due to domestic violence. I do not think the actual homeless are what are being referred to here, though.

Great song.

Here's another great one:

"We're in one of the richest countries in the world,
but the minimum wage is lower than it was thirty five years ago.
There are homeless people everywhere.
This homeless guy asked me for money the other day.
I was about to give it to him and then I thought he was going to use it on drugs or alcohol.
And then I thought, that's what I'm going to use it on.
Why am I judging this poor bastard.
People love to judge homeless guys. Like if you give them money they're just going to waste it.
Well, he lives in a box, what do you want him to do? Save it up and buy a wall unit?
Take a little run to the store for a throw rug and a CD rack? He's homeless.
I walked behind this guy the other day.
A homeless guy asked him for money.
He looks right at the homeless guy and says why don't you go get a job you bum.
People always say that to homeless guys like it is so easy.
This homeless guy was wearing his underwear outside his pants.
Outside his pants. I'm guessing his resume isn't all up to date.
I'm predicting some problems during the interview process.
I'm pretty sure even McDonalds has a "underwear goes inside the pants" policy.
Not that they enforce it really strictly, but technically I'm sure it is on the books."
