My parents had no problem with me wanting to go into the Navy. My dad was ROTC in college. Only he had to transfer to complete his degree and the second school didn't have the program. Both my grandfathers served in the military.

Let her do it. Doesn't mean she will end up in the sandbox. She could end up in Japan. She could have a wonderful opportunity to go someplace she might not otherwise get to visit.

Anchors Aweigh, my boys, Anchors Aweigh.
Farewell to foreign shores, We sail at break of day, of day.
Through our last night on shore, Drink to the foam,
Until we meet once more. Here's wishing you a happy voyage home!

i'm in the navy right now, it's not a bad thing. Just tell her to chose her job carefully. Don't let the recruiters send her on the "undesignated" program. They make it sound like she can chose whatever job she wants after getting a little experience in everything....well it doesn't work that way. The program is in the process of being faded out...so unless she wants to be a BM..the people the tie the boat up, and paint and preserve the ship...she should definitly figure out what she wants first. we have a saying in the navy...choose your rate(job) chose your fate.

I'm 23 and trying for the RAF. I think that the forces are a good thing for young people to experience. In the UK if you get into one of the forces then you have a pretty good life ahead of you. Its a case of 22 years full service or 40+ years of trudging the same civvy lifestyle ... easy choice in my books. Don't worry she'll be fine dude

oh one more comment...not to scare you but the navy isn't just staying on ships anymore. They are doing what they call IA's...you serve as support to the army on the ground in iraq. Ask the recruiter about it, and what rates they are looking for or not looking for.

Hey, I just wanted to say my bit. I am Navy, have been for 10 years now. In the Canadian Forces men serve alongside women, without issue. Now, there are stupid people of both genders and we all know that. There are definately people who shouldn't be here. I have to say that some of the finest and most capable sailors I've sailed with were women. And like the guys said above...choose your rate, choose your fate. I'm a weapons tech so I get more money that most other trades, I'm not an officer, I'm a juinior rank. What you guys in the US call a Petty Officer (2 chevrons) Leading Seaman in Canada. I would like to offer you this advice and to her as well. Look at the training and the cretification she'll obtain, and see hat she can do with it in the real (civilian) world. Boatswains cant do much. Niether can Naval Communicators (hard to find a job that need morse code or semaphore) So yes choose carefully. But, It is a great way to get an education, see the world, get new experience and make a lot of great friends. If this is what she wants to do, support her, but help her and guide her so she isnt stuck with nothing afterwards.

Take care, and good luck to you both.
