Methinks the problem is that I'm speaking of the act itself, while you're speaking of the results. There appears to be some confusion between our posts indeed. You may be referring to the act itself, while that is not at all my point. Quite to the contrary, I suggest that the act itself means little in this context, until intent kicks in. And while you may be under the impression that I'm referring to the result, I used the words 'sound moral and ethical INTENT', where deceiving would apply to that which is morally and ethically accepted as right, as opposed to deceiving specific individuals. Intent, not result. As you first posted, the only requirements were to speak falsely and have the intent to deceive. Under that construction, even a moral intent to deceive would technically fit the definition and thus be a lie. Read the definition again, it is not '... to speak falsely and have the intent to deceive...' but rather, '... to speak falsely or utter untruth knowingly, as with intent to deceive;' To speak falsely alone does not in any way shape or form automatically constitute a lie!!! '... what time is it? It is 5pm. No sir, it is 5'03!' If it is in fact 5'03, te 5pm answer could hardly constitute a lie while it is spoken fasely! Only if spoken falsely knowingly, as with intent to deceive! does it contitute a lie. |

lying is ok when you're cheating and stealing I was going to mention that. If the reason a person is lying is to cover up an already immoral act then isn't the question moot to begin with? And if their reason for lying is to instill (ahem) "faith" in their children then it's cool, right? Clearly people treat the concept of lying within the context of its moral purpose as Voileazur has already elucidated. Boy, that sounds sinful doesn’t it? Voil, are you an “elucidator”? A pervader of elucidations. I think feel a song coming on. |

what about if an insecure friend asks you if their giant hairy mole is visible under the makeup? do you tell them yes?
(btw, no, i cannot be serious tonite. sorry.) |

never ok, you should always be truthful. if they can't handle the truth, that's their problem.

Simply a question of ethics, not really religion. What are your thoughts? Is a pig's ass pork? |

And if their reason for lying is to instill (ahem) "faith" in their children then it's cool, right? in a religious belief there is no such thing as a lie |

what about if an insecure friend asks you if their giant hairy mole is visible under the makeup? do you tell them yes? (btw, no, i cannot be serious tonite. sorry.) Now that is not an easy one 'winnie' !!! Giant hairy moles must always be addressed with great diplomacy! (there's another term which means speaking falsely, but not necessarily lying!!!). If you were to spend the whole day with your 'giant hairy mole' friend, were sure not even accidentally mention the 'thing', and were certain that no other male, or otherwise potentially courting pretendors were to 'show-up', i wouldn't mention the 'thing', and IMO it wouldn't constitute a lie! Anything else, puts you in the league of hopeless sinners!!! :) |

" and voil, we are all sinners remember? some of us are just better at it than others. |
